KCET 2027: what it is and where the cycle stands
The Karnataka Common Entrance Test — officially the UGCET, the Undergraduate Common Entrance Test — is conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), a Government of Karnataka body. A KCET rank is how Karnataka fills its government and government-quota seats in Engineering, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, B.Sc. (Hons) and farm-science programmes, AYUSH courses and similar professional undergraduate programmes in the state. For Karnataka students it is the main admission test after the 2nd PUC, and for the engineering rank, KEA combines your KCET marks with your qualifying-exam marks — a detail students routinely underestimate.
KEA has not yet released the 2027 notification. The last completed cycle, UGCET 2026, is the realistic planning template: the notification was issued on 2 January 2026, online applications ran from 17 January 2026 and, after extensions, closed on 27 February 2026, and the exam was held on 23 and 24 April 2026 — Physics and Chemistry on the first day, Mathematics and Biology on the second — with the Kannada Language Test for Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadiga candidates on 22 April 2026. Notably, KEA revised the 2026 exam dates mid-cycle (an earlier May schedule was withdrawn), which is exactly why the official calendar on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in is the only date source worth trusting for 2027.
Who is eligible
You must have passed or be appearing in 2nd PUC / Class 12 or equivalent. For engineering, Physics and Mathematics are compulsory, with one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Computer Science or Electronics, and English as a language subject. The minimum is 45% aggregate in the optional subjects for General Merit candidates and 40% for SC, ST, Category-1 and OBC candidates of Karnataka. Course-wise rules differ — B.Pharm, Pharm-D, agriculture, veterinary and AYUSH have their own subject combinations, and medical/dental admission itself runs through NEET, with KCET handling the Karnataka counselling side.
Karnataka's seat system runs on eligibility clauses — fifteen years' study in Karnataka, seven years' study with Kannada medium, parents' domicile and service clauses, and so on — because the clause you fall under decides whether you get Karnataka-quota seats, reservation benefits and fee concessions. KEA publishes the clause list in the UGCET brochure. Candidates from outside Karnataka can apply and write the exam, but their seat claim is restricted compared with clause-eligible candidates; the fee they pay is also higher (below).
Exam pattern
(The pattern below is the UGCET 2026 pattern — the latest confirmed. KEA has not published a 2027 pattern; the UGCET 2027 brochure is the document that will confirm or revise it.)
KCET is still an offline, OMR-based pen-and-paper test — one of the few major CETs that has not gone computer-based. Each subject paper is separate: Physics 60 questions, Chemistry 60 questions, Mathematics 60 questions and Biology 60 questions, each question carrying 1 mark, each paper lasting 80 minutes, and there is no negative marking. In the 2026 schedule, papers ran in two sessions a day (10:30 AM–11:50 AM and 2:30 PM–3:50 PM — Physics and Chemistry on day one, Mathematics and Biology on day two), so a PCB/PCM candidate writes across two days; treat those slots as the expected 2027 pattern, not a published 2027 timetable. The syllabus is the Karnataka PU Board's Class 11 and 12 curriculum. The Horanadu/Gadinadu Kannada Language Test is a separate 50-mark paper (one hour, held the day before the main papers) for candidates claiming those quotas, and it is qualifying in nature: candidates must score at least 12 of 50 on it for their claim to stand (2026 rule).
For engineering, the rank is computed by taking your KCET marks and your PUC marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in equal proportion — which means a student who treats board/PU exams as a formality after KCET preparation quietly halves their chances. KEA also publishes the answer key and takes objections before results; ranks are then used in document verification and option entry (KEA's web counselling), where you list college-course combinations in priority order.
Fees and how to apply
The 2026 application fee was deliberately low: Rs 500 for Karnataka candidates in General Merit, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B categories; Rs 250 for SC, ST and Category-1 candidates and for female candidates from Karnataka; Rs 750 for candidates who studied outside Karnataka; and Rs 5,000 for candidates applying from outside India.
- Go to cetonline.karnataka.gov.in, open the UGCET link and register as a new user.
- Complete Aadhaar-based verification/e-KYC — KEA uses Aadhaar to lock your name and date of birth to the official record, reducing rejection risk.
- Fill in personal, academic and category details; Karnataka PUC candidates need their 13-digit Student Number issued by the PU department.
- Upload photograph, signature and left-thumb impression in the prescribed formats.
- Pay the fee online, submit, and take a printout of the final application form — you will need it at document verification.
Documents to keep ready
SSLC/10th marks card, 2nd PUC marks card (when issued), study certificates supporting your eligibility clause, caste and income certificate for reservation claims, Kannada-medium/rural study certificates if claiming those quotas, Aadhaar card, and the printed application form. At verification, KEA checks originals against exactly what you entered — a mismatch between the form and the certificate is the most common cause of candidates losing a round.
Common mistakes
Entering the wrong eligibility clause; assuming KCET alone decides the engineering rank (PUC marks count equally); treating the OMR format like a CBT (there is no "review later" — bubble carefully, shade fully, and carry your own pen and the admit card printout); and missing KEA's mid-cycle date revisions, which happen through notices on the KEA site, not through newspapers.
KCET marks vs rank: what 2026 scores actually bought
This is the table the official cycle never gives you, so be clear about its status: it is Collegedunia's analysis of KEA's official 2026 rank-card data (results declared 6 June 2026), for General Merit candidates with Class 12 PCM in the 88–92% band. In 2026, 3,09,014 students appeared and 2,92,782 received a rank. Your own rank will move — sometimes a long way — with your board percentage, because of the 50:50 rule below.
| KCET marks (of 180, PCM) | Indicative 2026 rank range (GM, 88–92% board PCM) | What it meant in practice |
|---|---|---|
| 170–180 | 1–100 | RVCE/MSRIT CSE or ISE effectively assured |
| 160–169 | 100–500 | Top Bengaluru colleges — CSE, ISE, AI/ML in reach |
| 150–159 | 500–1,500 | Most top branches at RVCE, PES, BMSCE in reach |
| 140–149 | 1,500–3,500 | CSE at MSRIT/BMSCE; ECE at RVCE feasible |
| 130–139 | 3,500–7,000 | CSE at mid-tier colleges; ECE at good colleges |
| 120–129 | 7,000–14,000 | ISE/ECE at mid-tier colleges |
| 110–119 | 14,000–25,000 | Tier-2 college options |
| 95–109 | 25,000–45,000 | Government and aided college seats |
For branch context from the same analysis of earlier final-round data: CSE at RVCE has closed inside roughly the top 1,000 ranks for several consecutive years, so a four-digit rank plan that assumes RVCE CSE is not a plan.
Worked example: the 50:50 rule in real numbers
KEA's engineering rank combines your KCET PCM score and your PUC/Class 12 PCM percentage equally. Take a candidate with 135 of 180 in KCET and 90% in board PCM: the composite works out to about 82.5 of 100, which in 2026 landed in roughly the 4,500–6,500 rank band. Give the same candidate 95% board PCM instead and the expected band improves to about 3,500–5,000 — same exam performance, up to ~2,000 ranks bought entirely by board marks. At the extreme, Collegedunia's analysis notes two students with identical KCET marks but a 10-percentage-point board gap can finish 10,000–14,000 ranks apart. That is the arithmetic behind this page's recurring warning: from January to April, an hour spent lifting a weak PUC subject can be worth more than an hour of extra KCET drilling, because both halves of the rank are still open until the board exams end.
Keep your application number alive: the KEA login, password and verification slip
Everything after the exam — admission ticket, rank card, document-verification slip, option entry — sits behind one login on the KEA portal, and the recovery rules are asymmetric in a way that catches students out. Aglasem's UGCET guide (opened 2026-10-20) spells them out from the live portal's behaviour: you log in with your application number and password; if you forget the password, the login page lets you reset it with your application number and the captcha shown. If you lose the application number itself, the login page has no recovery option for it at all — your printed final application form is the recovery document, which is why the steps above end with taking that printout, and why it should be photographed and stored in two places, not left in a folder until counselling.
If both are lost, the fallback is the KEA helpdesk — 080-23460460, the number shown both in Aglasem's guide and on KEA's own portal (checked directly on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in on 2026-10-20, where the live site still lists only UGCET 2026 — there is no UGCET 2027 section to log in to yet). Two smaller points from the same sources that students regularly miss: B.Arch admission through KEA needs a valid NATA score on top of the 2nd PUC/Class 12 pass — KCET itself has no architecture paper — and KEA counselling is not only for government colleges: private universities such as PES University and RV University also offer seats through KEA, so an option-entry list built only from government and aided colleges is shorter than the seat pool actually is.

Frequently asked questions
Is KCET the same as UGCET?
Yes. UGCET (Undergraduate Common Entrance Test) is KEA's official name for the exam; notices for 2027 will appear under UGCET 2027 on cetonline.karnataka.gov.in.
Do I need KCET for MBBS or BDS in Karnataka?
No. Medical and dental admission runs on your NEET-UG rank; you register with KEA for that counselling separately, but KCET marks play no part.
How many times a year is KCET held?
Once — usually in April, with no second session. A bad day cannot be re-sat until the next cycle, which is why the OMR discipline in the mistakes section above matters.
When does counselling happen, and how many rounds?
In 2026 KEA ran a mock allotment followed by three rounds between July and September, with the Round 3 final allotment on 7 September 2026. Expect the same shape in 2027 — after results, not before.
Where can I practise with past papers?
Subject-wise KCET previous-year papers from 2016 onwards, with answer keys for several years, circulate through KEA-linked listings; practise on paper, timed at 80 minutes per subject, because that — not a screen — is the format you will face.
