An interest-free loan, not a grant — and that is the point

The Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation's Postgraduate Scholarship is one of India's most respected private routes to funding a master's degree, and it works differently from almost everything else on this site. The money is repayable interest-free financial assistance, not a grant you keep. You borrow from the Foundation at zero interest, study at a top institution in India or abroad, and repay in easy instalments that begin one year after you complete your course. Because scholars repay, the same endowment funds the next generation — the Foundation's home page counts 288 scholars across 64 universities in 7 countries so far.

The Foundation itself was set up in 2002 by Narotam Sekhsaria, a University Department of Chemical Technology graduate who promoted Gujarat Ambuja Cements. His stated aim was to recognise and promote intellectual excellence, and the scholarship is unapologetically merit-first: it looks for a consistently high academic record, and it wraps the money in a mentoring programme and a scholar network that alumni consistently describe as the more durable benefit.

The 2026 cycle is closed. The Foundation's application page records the 2026 deadline as 5 pm on 23 March 2026, and shortlisted candidates went through interviews between April and June 2026, with selected scholars attending a mandatory Orientation Programme in July 2026. If you are reading this in October 2026, you are preparing for the next call — and this scholarship rewards people who prepare early, because its window is short.

Who is eligible

The Foundation's own eligibility list for the 2026 cycle had six conditions, and all six had to hold at once:

  1. Indian national, residing in India.
  2. Below 30 years of ageas of 31 January of the application year (31 January 2026 for the cycle just closed).
  3. Graduated from an accredited Indian university.Final-year students and those awaiting results could also apply.
  4. Planning postgraduate study at a top-ranking institution from the Fall intakeof that year — in India or abroad.
  5. You may apply while your university applications are still pending.Candidates who had applied and were awaiting acceptance were explicitly eligible.
  6. The award is conditional on actually securing admission. No admission, no money — the scholarship follows the offer, not the other way round.

The Foundation's announcement covered fields across the pure sciences, applied sciences, social sciences, humanities, engineering, law and management. Note what is not on the eligibility list: there is no income ceiling and no marks cut-off published. That does not mean marks do not matter — the Foundation describes its assessment as rigorous and its scholars as students with "a consistently high academic record" — but the filter is holistic merit, not a single percentage.

How much, and on what terms

There is no published fixed amount. The assistance is assessed against your course, institution and funding gap, and can be full or partial support. Two terms are fixed and worth planning around: repayment starts one year after course completion, and it is made in easy instalments — the Foundation's own words. There is no interest at any point. A non-refundable application fee of ₹500 applies, paid online to unlock the full application form.

How the application actually runs

The 2026 cycle shows the shape every cycle follows:

  1. Applications open in January. The Foundation invites applications in January every academic year.
  2. Registeron the application portal with your email and password.
  3. Pay the ₹500 feeonline to access the form. It is non-refundable.
  4. Complete the Full Application (Parts 1–3)and submit. An automated confirmation email follows. Strikingly, no documents are required at this stage — no marksheets, no recommendation letters, no admission proof.
  5. If shortlisted, upload the documents the Foundation asks for.Trackers of the 2026 cycle list attested marksheets of all undergraduate years, qualifying-exam scorecards (GRE, GMAT, CAT, GATE as applicable), the university acceptance letter with fee structure once you have it, reference letters, parents' latest income-tax returns and an attested passport copy.
  6. Interview.Shortlisted candidates interviewed between April and June.
  7. Orientation.Selected scholars must attend the July Orientation Programme — attendance is mandatory for the award to stand, as it is for the interview.

Common mistakes

The first is treating this as a grant and budgeting as if the money never comes back; it does, starting a year after your course ends. The second is waiting for a confirmed admission before applying — the Foundation explicitly allows applications from candidates still awaiting decisions, and the January-to-March window will not wait for your offers. The third is missing how early the cycle runs: by the time most students start thinking about Fall funding in spring, this window has already closed. And the fourth is under-preparing the academic record narrative — with no documents at stage one, your application form itself carries the whole first impression.

Preparing for the next cycle

Nothing about the next call is announced yet, but the Foundation's own page states the rhythm: applications are invited in January each year. For a Fall 2027 start, work backwards — have your university applications submitted by December, your test scores in hand, and your documents (marksheets, passport, references) assembled before the window opens, so the short January–March window is spent on the application and the interview, not on paperwork. If you turn 30 before 31 January 2027, check the age clause of the new call the day it appears; it is the one condition no interview performance can cure.
