The oldest loan scholarship in the Mahindra stable

The K. C. Mahindra Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies was the K. C. Mahindra Education Trust's very first initiative, created in the mid-1950s to help Indian students take up postgraduate study overseas. Over the decades it has supported more than 1,830 Indian students at leading universities worldwide. The 2026 cycle marked a significant change: the scholarship was extended to students pursuing postgraduate studies at select premier institutions within India, reflecting the Trust's view that world-class postgraduate education is now available at home as well as abroad.

The award is an interest-free loan scholarship — and that phrase deserves a moment's attention, because it's where most confusion begins. This is not a grant. The Trust lends you the money with zero interest, and you repay it under the Trust's terms after your studies. For many students that is still far better than a commercial education loan: no interest accrues, and the lender is a charitable trust rather than a bank. But if you're comparing scholarship offers, compare like with like — a ₹5 lakh interest-free loan and a ₹5 lakh grant are not the same thing.

How much is awarded

Every year the Trust awards interest-free loan scholarships to a minimum of 50 students:

  • Up to ₹10 lakh for each of the top 3 K. C. Mahindra Fellows
  • Up to ₹5 lakh for other selected awardees

Candidates travelling from outside Mumbai for the interview stage are reimbursed for travel expenses (not accommodation), a small but practical detail included in the programme notes.

Who can apply

Eligibility is short and strictly enforced:

  • You must be an Indian citizen.
  • You must hold a first-class degree, or an equivalent diploma of similar standard, from a recognised university. Second-class degrees do not qualify.
  • You must be enrolling in a postgraduate programme that starts within the cycle's window:
  • Universities overseas: August 2026 to February 2027 (for the 2026 cycle)
  • Universities in India: June to September 2026 (for the 2026 cycle)
  • Final-year students may apply, provided they produce their final marksheet or a provisional certificate from their institute — confirming completion with a first class — before the end of June of the cycle year.

Undergraduate study, seminars, and conferences are not covered. You may apply before your admission is confirmed — applicants who have applied to reputable universities are accepted at the form stage — but proof of admission becomes compulsory by the interview stage. That sequencing is genuinely helpful if you're juggling multiple offers in the spring.

Where the 2026 cycle stands — and what comes next

Applications for the academic year 2026 are closed. The official page records the deadline as 30 April 2026, 6:00 pm. If you missed it, there is no late window — the Trust runs one round a year. The 2027 cycle has not been announced yet as of this writing; based on the programme's annual rhythm, expect the next call early in the year, with a spring deadline similar to 2026's. The right move now is preparation, not waiting idly: your first-class record, your admission applications, and your statement of purpose are all things you can strengthen this autumn.

How to apply (the process, as run in 2026)

  • Watch the scholarships page at kcmet.org for the cycle's announcement and open the application portal linked from there.
  • Register and complete the online application with your academic record, your target programme, and your admission status (applied or admitted).
  • Upload your documents — at minimum the admission letter (when available), a letter of recommendation from a referee (on the letterhead of the referee's institute or company), and a statement of purpose.
  • Submit before the deadline — the 2026 deadline was 6:00 pm on 30 April; treat evening deadlines as real.
  • If you're a final-year applicant, file your final marksheet or provisional certificate confirming first class before the end of June.
  • Shortlisted candidates attend an interview; keep your admission proof ready for that stage.

For scholarship queries, the Trust directs applicants to the email address given on its scholarships page — use that, not phone numbers from third-party listings.

Common mistakes

  • Calling it a free scholarship. It's an interest-free loan. Plan repayment into your post-study finances.
  • Applying with a second-class degree. The first-class requirement is absolute and checked against your marksheet.
  • Missing the June provisional-certificate deadline. Final-year applicants who fail to prove first-class completion by end of June lose eligibility, even if shortlisted.
  • Course dates outside the window. A programme starting in March (overseas) or October (India) falls outside the 2026 windows — check your start date before applying.
  • Weak referee letters. The recommendation must be on official letterhead; a plain typed letter reads as unverifiable and hurts a strong file.

Is it worth applying for?

If you hold a first class, have (or are applying for) a place on a reputable postgraduate programme, and need ₹5–10 lakh of funding, this is one of India's most established postgraduate awards — nearly seven decades old, with over 1,830 alumni. The loan structure means you should apply with clear eyes, but an interest-free loan at this scale, from a trust that has run this programme since the 1950s, is a serious option in any funding plan — and for the three Fellows each year, ₹10 lakh interest-free is hard to beat.
