What the scholarship is
INSPIRE — Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research — is the Department of Science and Technology's flagship scheme for keeping bright young minds in basic science. Its Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) component pays ₹80,000 per year to meritorious students pursuing natural and basic sciences at the bachelor's and master's level. There is no separate entrance examination, which is what makes it unusual: you qualify on the strength of what you've already achieved — your Class 12 board result, your JEE Advanced or NEET rank, or a national talent credential.
The money is split deliberately: ₹60,000 a year as the scholarship itself (roughly ₹5,000 a month for living and study costs) and ₹20,000 as a mentorship grant you can claim for summer research projects or internships at recognised research institutions. Over a five-year course, that totals up to ₹4,00,000. Payments come by Direct Benefit Transfer to the scholar's Aadhaar-linked bank account, and the scholarship can run for up to five years covering your undergraduate and postgraduate years.
Who is eligible
Four conditions, all of which must hold:
- Age:17 to 22 years.
- Academic route— any one of these:
- You are in the top 1% of successful students in your Class 12 board examination (any recognised State or Central board), or
- You rank within the top 10,000 in JEE Advanced or NEET, or
- You are a scholar of a recognised national talent programme — NTSE, JBNSTS, KVPY, or an international Olympiad.
- Course:you must be enrolled in a full-time regular programme in natural or basic sciences — B.Sc., B.S., M.Sc., M.S., or an integrated M.Sc./M.S. in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Statistics, Geology, Astronomy, Electronics, or Biotechnology.
- Not double-funded:you should not be receiving another major government scholarship.
The course condition trips people up every year. Engineering, medicine, pharmacy, commerce, management, architecture, and other professional degrees are not covered, even if you were a top-1% board scorer. The scheme exists to pull talent toward pure science research careers; if you chose B.Tech or MBBS, this scholarship is simply not for you, and applying will waste your time.
The amount and how long it lasts
| Component | Value |
|---|---|
| Annual scholarship | ₹60,000 (paid monthly, ~₹5,000/month) |
| Summer mentorship / research grant | ₹20,000 per year, claimable for approved summer projects |
| Total per year | ₹80,000 |
| Maximum duration | Up to 5 years, tied to your course |
Renewal is not automatic. You must score at least 60% marks (or the prescribed grade) each year, pass all examinations in your first attempt, and submit your annual performance report — signed by your Head of Institution — with your mark sheets within 12 months. A failed year, a skipped exam, or a late submission forfeits the scholarship for that year.
How to apply
Applications are entirely online at online-inspire.gov.in, and there is no application fee.
- Open the portal and register as a new user with a valid personal email ID and mobile number (institutional email addresses are not accepted).
- Log in and complete the SHE application form — personal details, Class 12 board and marks or your JEE/NEET/talent-exam credentials, and your enrolled course and institution.
- Upload the required documents (see below), checking each scan for clarity.
- Review everything and submit before the deadline of the current call.
- Save the acknowledgement and track your application status through the portal login; provisionally selected lists are published on the same portal.
The deadline moves each academic year and is strictly enforced — the last observed cycle closed at the end of November, but treat that only as a rough guide. Read the live notification on the portal for the current call's dates.
Documents to keep ready
- Class 10 marksheet or certificate (proof of date of birth)
- Class 12 marksheet
- Proof of top-1% status (board-issued eligibility/advisory note or cut-off certificate) or your JEE Advanced/NEET rank card, or NTSE/KVPY/JBNSTS/Olympiad credential
- Endorsement form signed by your college Principal, Director, or University Registrar
- Passport-size photograph
- Aadhaar card
- Bank account details (Aadhaar-linked, for DBT)
- Admission proof / bonafide certificate from your institution
- Category certificate, if applicable
Incomplete or illegible uploads are the leading cause of rejection before merit is even considered — scan cleanly, stay under the portal's file-size limits, and submit only one application.
Common mistakes
- Applying from the wrong degree. B.Tech and MBBS students apply every year despite the rules; every one of them is rejected.
- Missing the renewal paperwork. Scholars lose years of funding by submitting performance reports late.
- Assuming the top-1% means your school. It's your board's top 1%, and the cut-off varies by board and year — check the advisory note your board issues.
- Multiple applications. One application per candidate; duplicates are rejected.
- Ignoring the portal for months. Selection lists, deficiency notices, and payment updates all appear on online-inspire.gov.in. If DST flags a document defect and you never log in, you simply miss it.
Why it matters beyond the money
KVPY, the old national science fellowship, was merged into INSPIRE in 2022, making SHE the single national scholarship route for basic-science undergraduates of this kind. The ₹20,000 mentorship grant is the underrated half of the award: a funded summer research stint in your second or third year is often what turns a good student into a future researcher — which is precisely what DST is paying for.
