Who can apply

The scheme is narrower than the regular Post-Matric Scholarship, and that is deliberate. You must:

  • Belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, with a valid caste certificate.
  • Have secured admission to a full-time undergraduate, postgraduate or professional course beyond Class 12 at an institution notified by the Ministry under this scheme. The notified list is dominated by premier institutions — IITs, IIMs, NITs, AIIMS-type institutes and other colleges the Ministry has empanelled. A seat in an ordinary college does not qualify, however good your marks are.
  • Have passed Class 12 with at least 60% marks.
  • Have a total annual family income from all sources of less than ₹8,00,000.
  • Be a fresh applicant in the first year of the course. Fresh awards are made only to students entering the course; students already in the second year or later join through the renewal route only if they were selected in their first year.

A maximum of two children from the same family can hold this scholarship. If you are in a notified institution but do not win one of the limited Top Class slots allotted to your institution, you are not left with nothing — you remain eligible for the Post-Matric Scholarship for SC students through your state.

What the scholarship pays

Selected students receive:

  • Full tuition fee and non-refundable charges. For private-sector institutions there is a ceiling of ₹2,00,000 per year per student. For approved private flying clubs (pilot training), the ceiling is ₹3.72 lakh per year.
  • Academic allowance of ₹86,000 in the first year, which is meant to cover living expenses, books and stationery, and a computer or laptop of a reputed brand with accessories such as a UPS and printer.
  • Academic allowance of ₹41,000 in every subsequent year of the course.

The Ministry pays the money directly to the student through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). One obligation students often miss: once the amount lands in your account, you are expected to deposit the fee with your institute promptly — within about a month of receiving it. Keep the fee receipt; your institute will ask for it during renewal verification.

The scholarship continues for the full duration of the course, subject to satisfactory academic progress. For renewal you must clear all subjects in the previous academic year, stay in the same course and the same institution, and your family income must remain below the ₹8 lakh ceiling. Changing colleges after selection is one of the surest ways to lose the award.

Dates for 2026–27

For the 2026–27 cycle, the scheme opened on NSP on 1 June 2026 and student applications are being accepted until 31 October 2026. Defective-application verification and institute verification run until 15 November 2026, and district/state nodal officer verification until 30 November 2026. Treat 31 October as a hard deadline — NSP schemes do sometimes get extended, but extensions are announced, never guaranteed.

How to apply, step by step

  • Go to scholarships.gov.in and complete the One Time Registration (OTR) with your Aadhaar if you have not already; NSP now requires OTR before you can apply for any scheme.
  • Log in and choose the fresh application for 2026–27.
  • Select "Central Sector Scholarship of Top Class Education for SC Students" and confirm your institute appears in the notified list while filling the form.
  • Fill in personal, academic and bank details exactly as they appear on your certificates and passbook. Your bank account must be Aadhaar-seeded and DBT-enabled, or the payment will fail later even if you are selected.
  • Upload the documents (listed below), submit the form and note your application ID.
  • Get the application verified by your institute within the verification window, and track the status on NSP until it shows as verified at all levels.

Documents you will need

  • Caste certificate (SC)
  • Income certificate issued by a revenue officer not below the rank of Tehsildar
  • Class 12 marksheet and certificate
  • Admission proof / bona fide certificate from the institute
  • Fee structure or fee receipt from the institute
  • Aadhaar card and bank passbook details

Common mistakes that cost students this scholarship

The most common is applying from a non-notified institution — no amount of merit fixes that. The second is an income certificate from the wrong authority or for the wrong financial year. The third is assuming selection is automatic on eligibility: slots are limited and allotted institution-wise, so a complete, early, correctly verified application matters. Finally, do not hold another scholarship for the same course alongside this one, and do not let the institute verification window lapse — an unverified application is treated the same as no application.
