The honest status first: IAT 2027 has not been announced

There is no official IISER Aptitude Test 2027 registration date or exam date as of 20 October 2026. The official IISER admissions portal currently displays an "Admissions 2026: Website Updating Soon" notice — no 2027 notification, brochure or application form exists yet. Do not act on any IAT 2027 date you see elsewhere; it is a guess.

What is certain is how this test works. The 2026 cycle is fully complete, the exam's structure barely changes between years, and everything below is drawn from that cycle, clearly labelled, so you know precisely what to expect when the 2027 notice lands.

What IAT is, and who runs it

The IISER Aptitude Test is the national computer-based entrance examination for the five-year BS-MS dual degree at the seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research — Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati and Berhampur. These are autonomous institutes under the Ministry of Education, built specifically for science education and research. IAT scores are also used for the BS programmes at IISc Bangalore and the BS programmes at IIT Madras, so one test opens three of India's most research-focused destinations.

One thing applicants often miss: IAT is now the only admission channel into the IISERs. JEE Advanced scores are no longer considered for IISER admission, and the old KVPY channel has been discontinued — selection for the 2026-27 session was strictly through IAT, on merit and seat availability. There is no separate state quota and no donation route; this is a single national merit list process.

How the 2026 cycle ran (your best guide to 2027)

For 2026, applications opened on 5 March and closed on 13 April, with a correction window from 16 to 18 April. Admit cards were released on 24 May, and the test was held on 7 June 2026 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. Counselling and seat allotment followed through June and July. Expect the 2027 cycle to follow the same rhythm — applications opening around March and the exam in early June — but treat that as a pattern, not a confirmed date.

Who is eligible

For the 2026 cycle, the rules were: you must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2024, 2025 or 2026 from a board recognised by the Council of Boards of School Education in India; students appearing in 2026 were also eligible, provided they qualified before counselling. You must have studied at least three of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology during Class 11–12 — note that you do not need all four. The marks bar is 60% aggregate for General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates and 55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Applicants must be Indian citizens, PIO or OCI cardholders; foreign nationals outside those categories cannot appear. There is no age limit, which is unusually generous for an Indian entrance exam.

The eligibility window rolls forward each year, so for IAT 2027 you would expect the 2025, 2026 and 2027 pass-outs to qualify — but this has not been announced, and the 2027 brochure is the final word.

The exam pattern

Pattern below is the confirmed 2026 cycle — the latest confirmed. No IAT 2027 pattern has been announced.

IAT is a three-hour computer-based test with 60 multiple-choice questions — 15 each from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics — for a total of 240 marks. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong answer loses 1, so the test rewards accuracy as much as knowledge. The paper is set in English and Hindi. Crucially, everyone answers all four subject sections regardless of their Class 12 stream: a student with PCB must still attempt the Mathematics section, and a PCM student must attempt Biology. Because the test is pitched at conceptual understanding rather than formula recall, cross-stream preparation is normal and expected — most serious IAT preparation includes at least basic Class 11–12 material in the "missing" subject.

Fees and how applying works

In 2026 the application fee was ₹2,000 for General, EWS and OBC candidates and ₹1,000 for SC, ST, Kashmiri Migrants and PwD candidates, paid online. Applying is fully digital: register on iiseradmission.in with your email and mobile number, fill the form, upload a photograph, signature and documents, and pay. Download and keep the confirmation. Keep ready: Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets, category or PwD certificates, a passport-size photograph, signature, and a valid photo ID.

Mistakes that cost candidates their shot

First, stream tunnel vision: ignoring the fourth subject because "I'm a PCB student" hands away 60 of 240 marks. Second, missing the application window — the March–April registration period is short, with no extended second phase. Third, eligibility arithmetic: check your aggregate percentage against the 60/55 bar before applying, not after the result. Fourth, assuming a strong JEE preparation automatically covers IAT — the aptitude format, the negative marking, and the compulsory cross-subject sections make dedicated practice papers worthwhile. Finally, do not build your calendar around any expected IAT 2027 date until the official portal carries the notice.

What to do now

Study all four sciences to Class 11–12 depth with MCQ practice under a 180-minute clock, keep your documents ready, and watch iiseradmission.in — on the established pattern, the 2027 application window is a March 2027 event. When it opens, register early and double-check your passing year and subject combination against the new brochure.
