MICAT 2027: the exam that decides who gets into MICA

MICAT — the MICA Admission Test — is the institute-level entrance exam of MICA, Ahmedabad, and it is mandatory for admission to its programmes starting in 2027: the flagship PGDM-C (Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Communications), the PGDM, and MICA's other programmes. It runs twice a year, as MICAT-I and MICAT-II, and you can appear in both — MICA uses the better of your two scores for shortlisting. That single design fact shapes your strategy: attempt MICAT-I in December, learn the paper, and take MICAT-II in February with real information instead of guesswork.

But understand MICAT's place in the funnel. MICA also requires a valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score — one of those three is mandatory. MICAT does not replace them; it sits alongside them in the shortlisting for the Group Exercise and Personal Interview (GEPI). The official page states it plainly: CAT/XAT/GMAT is mandatory, with CAT 2026, XAT 2027 and GMAT (2025 onwards) as the accepted windows, and candidates update their score options on the MICA application form — after the CAT score and XAT registration number arrive — on or before 30 January 2027. For XAT, you mention only the registration number; MICA collects the score from XLRI itself. IIMs, XLRI and GMAC have no role in MICA's selection.

The 2026-27 schedule

  • MICAT-I registration: open now on the MICA admissions portal, closing 21 November 2026 at 11:50 PM.
  • MICAT-I admit card: 3 December 2026.
  • MICAT-I exam: 5 December 2026.
  • MICAT-I score declaration: 18 December 2026.
  • MICAT-II registration: opens 25 November 2026, reported to run to 30 January 2027.
  • MICAT-II exam: 12 February 2027.

MICAT is a computer-based test held across roughly 48 cities — the official list runs from Ahmedabad and Aizawl through Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Visakhapatnam — and MICA reserves the right to change centres and dates, so the portal's live calendar governs. On exam day, MICA asks candidates to keep themselves available till 6:00 PM in case of any re-examination requirement.

Who can apply

Admission to both PGDM-C and PGDM requires a bachelor's degree under the 10+2+3 system, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Association of Indian Universities, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, in any discipline. Final-year students can apply: you produce a certificate from your principal or registrar confirming you are in the final year or awaiting results, submit it by 30 June 2027, join provisionally if selected, and then submit the final marksheet and passing certificate by 31 December 2027 — miss that and the provisional admission is cancelled automatically. There is no age bar. If your institute reports CGPA, it must be converted to a percentage for the application, with the conversion factor certificate produced at verification.

Exam pattern

MICAT has three sections, always in this order, and each does a different job:

  • Section A — Psychometric Test. This is the gatekeeper. It is a qualifier: MICA evaluates your aptitude and descriptive performance only if you clear the psychometric section, so do not treat it as throwaway.
  • Section B — Descriptive Test. Four questions testing written expression — traditionally story-writing tasks that measure creativity, structure and language.
  • Section C — Aptitude Test, in three sub-sections: Divergent and Convergent Thinking; Verbal Ability; and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. Note that the PGDM programme weights quantitative ability more heavily — MICA says the QADI cut-offs may be higher for PGDM candidates, because the programme leans on analytics.

The paper is English-medium, historically around 2 hours 15 minutes with roughly 224 questions, and negative marking of −0.25 has applied in the aptitude section. Because the exact question count and marking rules vary by cycle, the live MICAT instructions on your admit card and the portal govern — read them on exam morning, not the night before.

Fees

The official admissions page sets the MICAT application fee at Rs 2,500, plus ₹500 per additional programme, payable if you are shortlisted for interview. The two-year PGDM-C is a full-time residential programme at MICA's Ahmedabad campus, listed at ₹29.50 lakh (indicative, subject to revision), with the institute awarding scholarships covering 25% to 100% of tuition on merit and financial need.

How to apply

Register on the MICA admissions portal (mica.ac.in) with your email and mobile number, fill the form — personal, academic and test details, including which CAT/XAT/GMAT score you intend to submit — upload your photograph and signature in the specified sizes, pay the fee online, and download the confirmation page. Register separately for each phase: MICAT-I and MICAT-II are separate registrations, and if you take both, the better score counts. Update your CAT/XAT/GMAT details on the form on or before 30 January 2027.

Common mistakes

The expensive ones are predictable: missing the 21 November 2026 closing (11:50 PM is the cut-off, not "before midnight"); applying without having taken CAT, XAT or GMAT — the form will not save you from that requirement; treating the psychometric section casually when it is a qualifier; and choosing MICAT-I only, when the better-of-two rule makes a MICAT-II attempt nearly free upside. Final-year students should calendar the two certificate deadlines now — 30 June and 31 December 2027 — because MICA cancels provisional admission automatically on the second.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last date to register for MICAT-I 2027?

MICAT-I registration closes on 21 November 2026 at 11:50 PM, with the admit card on 3 December 2026, the exam on 5 December 2026 and score declaration on 18 December 2026.

Is CAT, XAT or GMAT compulsory for MICA admission?

Yes. One of those three scores is mandatory — CAT 2026, XAT 2027 or GMAT (2025 onwards) are the accepted windows — and MICAT sits alongside that score in the shortlisting for the Group Exercise and Personal Interview; it does not replace it.

Who can apply for MICAT?

Admission requires a bachelor's degree under the 10+2+3 system, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Association of Indian Universities, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in any discipline. Final-year students can also apply, subject to the certificate deadlines described in this guide.

What is the MICAT application fee?

The application fee is Rs 2,500, plus ₹500 per additional programme, payable if you are shortlisted for interview.

Can candidates take both MICAT-I and MICAT-II?

Yes. MICAT runs twice a year, candidates can appear in both, and MICA uses the better of the two scores for shortlisting. MICAT-I and MICAT-II are separate registrations.

Why does the psychometric section matter?

Section A, the Psychometric Test, is a qualifier: MICA evaluates a candidate's aptitude and descriptive performance only if they clear the psychometric section.
