XAT 2027: the management entrance that is not CAT, explained from the top

XAT — the Xavier Aptitude Test — is India's oldest national management entrance exam, conducted by XLRI – Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur, on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). Its 2027 edition is now in its registration window: registration opened on 15 July 2026 and closes on 6 December 2026, and the exam itself is on Sunday, 3 January 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, in a single computer-based slot across 100-plus test cities.

More than 250 B-schools accept XAT scores — commonly cited lists name XLRI itself, XIM University Bhubaneswar, SPJIMR Mumbai, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi, GIM Goa, TAPMI, MICA and FORE School of Management, among others. One fact matters disproportionately here: XLRI's own flagship programmes accept XAT (and GMAT for the GMP route), not CAT. If XLRI is on your list at all, XAT is not optional for you — it is the exam. Even if it is not, XAT's Decision Making section and its verbal style make it a genuinely different test from CAT, and candidates who prepare for it as "CAT plus a bit" reliably underperform.

The registration fee is uniform across categories — ₹2,300 for the XAT test itself, with ₹200 more per XLRI programme you choose in the same form. Trackers also report GMAT-route fees for the General Management programme (₹2,600 for Indian candidates, ₹5,000 for NRI/foreign candidates), which matter only if you are taking that specific route. The admit-card date is explicitly tentative: treat 20 December as the target, download the card the moment the link activates, and check your test city and reporting time the same day — January first-Sunday slots leave no room for a day-before surprise.

Eligibility

XAT's eligibility is deliberately simple. You need a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years, in any discipline. Final-year students may apply — trackers of the official criteria put the completion deadline as June 2027 — and there is no minimum percentage requirement in graduation and no age limit. Working professionals and candidates holding professional qualifications such as CA or CS may also appear. Each accepting institute sets its own admission criteria and cut-offs on top of XAT eligibility, so "eligible for XAT" and "eligible for a particular B-school" are two different statements; check both.

Exam pattern and marking — read this carefully

XAT 2027 has 95 multiple-choice questions, one mark each, over 180 minutes:

Exam pattern and marking — read this carefully
SectionQuestions
Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning26
Decision Making21
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation28
General Knowledge20
Total95

The first three sections form Part 1 and the last is Part 2, taken in a single sitting. Marking: −0.25 for each wrong answer, no negative marking in General Knowledge, and a signature XAT trap — a penalty of −0.10 for every unattempted question after the first eight left blank in Part 1. In other words, strategic skipping beyond a point costs marks; you cannot safely blank your way through the section you fear most. Only Part 1 counts toward the XAT percentile; the GK score is reported separately and is used by institutes at the interview stage — XLRI has historically looked at it there — so do not treat the GK section as a throwaway.

Decision Making deserves its own sentence, because it is the section with no CAT equivalent: short business and ethical-dilemma cases where you choose the most defensible course of action. It rewards calm, stakeholder-aware judgement, not tricks — and it is eminently practisable with past papers.

How to register, step by step

  1. Create your accountat applications.xatonline.in with a valid email ID and mobile number. You will receive a XAT ID and a verification link by email; verify promptly.
  2. Log in and complete the application form— personal details, academic qualifications (Class 10, 12, graduation), work experience if any.
  3. Choose your XLRI programmesinside the same form if you want them (₹200 each), and select your preferred test cities — trackers report up to six preferences; popular cities fill on a first-come basis, so early registration genuinely helps.
  4. Upload your photograph and signatureas scanned images within the portal's size limits (trackers cite files up to 1 MB each).
  5. Pay ₹2,300 plus programme feesonline (card, net banking, UPI or wallet routes are the standard portal options) and save the confirmation. An unpaid form is not a registration.

The correction/edit window reported by trackers fell in mid-October 2026 and is already behind us; if you registered early, recheck your form details now rather than assuming they carried over correctly.

Common mistakes

Leaving registration to the final December week and losing your preferred test city. Selecting XLRI programmes carelessly — the ₹200-per-programme choice is made inside this single form, and discovering later that you never selected BM or HRM is an expensive oversight. Banking on the tentative admit-card date without checking the portal in the last week of December. Leaving more than eight questions unattempted in a tough section without realising the unattempted penalty is accruing. Ignoring GK entirely, then meeting it again in the interview room. And preparing only CAT mocks: XAT's verbal passages are more literary and abstract, and its Decision Making section needs its own deliberate practice block from October onward.

What happens after the exam

Expect the answer key process and then results in late January 2027 — trackers anticipate the result by 31 January, with scorecard download running into mid-2027 — but XLRI has not pinned every post-exam date on the portal yet, so treat those as expectations, not promises. Institutes then run their own GD-PI shortlists off XAT percentiles. Your job between now and 3 January is fixed: finish registration well before 6 December, protect your city choice, and give Decision Making the same respect you give Quant. XAT rewards the candidate who prepared for the exam it actually is.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last date to register for XAT 2027?

Who is eligible for XAT 2027?

You need a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years, in any discipline. Final-year students may apply — trackers of the official criteria put the completion deadline as June 2027 — and there is no minimum percentage requirement in graduation and no age limit.

No. XLRI's own flagship programmes accept XAT (and GMAT for the GMP route), not CAT, so if XLRI is on your list, XAT is the exam you must take.
