The 2026 timeline (your planning template)
JEE Advanced 2026, conducted by IIT Roorkee: online registration 23 April–2 May 2026 (fee payment till 4 May), admit card 11 May, the exam on Sunday, 17 May 2026 (Paper 1 9:00 AM–12:00 noon, Paper 2 2:30–5:30 PM), candidate responses on 21 May, provisional answer key 25 May with objections open 25–26 May, and final answer key plus result on 1 June 2026, feeding JoSAA counselling from 2 June. Expect the 2027 edition to land in a similar mid-May slot — but treat that as planning intuition, not a fact, until jeeadv.ac.in publishes the 2027 schedule.
Who is eligible — the five criteria
IIT Roorkee enforced five non-negotiable criteria for 2026, and they are the same gates you must clear for 2027:
- JEE Main performance. You must be among the top ~2.5 lakh qualifiers of JEE Main 2026 (Paper 1, B.E./B.Tech) — for 2026 the actual figure was 2,50,182, with the category breakup GEN-EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OPEN 40.5%, plus 5% horizontal PwD reservation in each.
- Class 12 timeline. You must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or be appearing in 2026 — for 2027, read the brochure for the corresponding pair of years.
- Class 12 marks.Minimum 75% aggregate in Class 12 (or be in the top 20 percentile of your board), relaxed to 65% for SC/ST/PwD.
- Age.Born on or after 1 October 2001 for general/EWS/OBC-NCL; on or after 1 October 1996 for SC/ST/PwD (five-year relaxation). For 2027, expect the cutoff to shift by exactly one year.
- Attempts.A maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years. Appearing in 2025 counts.
Fail any one and registration is not possible — eligibility is verified against JEE Main data at login, so there is no workaround.
Exam pattern
Two compulsory papers on the same day, both computer-based, each three hours: Paper 1 in the morning, Paper 2 in the afternoon, at the same centre. Each paper carries around 180 marks covering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Appearing in only one paper disqualifies you from ranking — there is no partial credit. The section-wise structure (single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct, numerical-value questions, match-the-following, comprehension) changes slightly every year and is published with the question paper; negative marking exists in most sections, which is why blind guessing is punished here unlike in JEE Main. The medium is English and Hindi. Note that architecture aspirants write the separate Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) after the result — in 2026 it was held 4 June with results on 7 June.
How registration works
Only JEE Main qualifiers can register — the portal at jeeadv.ac.in authenticates you against your JEE Main credentials. The steps: log in, fill basic data and examination-city choices, upload scanned certificates (category, Class 10, Class 12/appearing), pay the fee online before the payment deadline, and download the confirmation. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates had a separate earlier window (from 6 April 2026 in that cycle) — if that applies to you, watch for it in the 2027 brochure. One 2026 lesson worth banking: the original 2 May registration close was extended to 11:59 PM on 5 May 2026 by an official notice on jeeadv.ac.in, with the site stressing that registration is incomplete until the fee is paid. Extensions happen, but they are announced on the official site only — never plan around one.
What registration cost in 2026 (official fee page)
For examination centres in India, the official 2026 fee was ₹1,600 for female candidates (all categories) and for SC, ST and PwD candidates, and ₹3,200 for all other Indian candidates. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates paid USD 100 (SAARC residence) or USD 200 (non-SAARC). The fee excludes gateway/bank charges and is non-refundable and non-transferable. Budget the same order for 2027, but confirm the 2027 table in the new brochure — do not pay anyone a "2027 fee" before it exists.
Documents checklist for registration day
Class 10 certificate/marksheet (date-of-birth proof); Class 12 marksheet or appearing proof; JEE Main application details for login; category certificate in the prescribed format (GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC or ST, as applicable); PwD certificate and scribe documents if applicable; a recent photograph and signature in the brochure's sizes. There is no correction window in JEE Advanced registration — the form you submit and pay for is final, which is why the checklist matters more here than in JEE Main.
JEE Main vs JEE Advanced — do not confuse the two gates
| JEE Main (2026) | JEE Advanced (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can sit it | Any eligible Class 12 candidate | Only the top 2,50,182 JEE Main Paper 1 qualifiers |
| Papers | One paper per session, 3 hours, 300 marks | Two compulsory papers the same day, 3 hours each, about 180 marks each (360 total) |
| What it admits to | NITs, IIITs, GFTIs via JoSAA; qualifier for Advanced | 23 IITs via JoSAA; IISc Bengaluru B.Tech also used Advanced ranks in 2026 |
| Attempts | Up to 3 consecutive years, 2 sessions a year | Maximum 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years |
| Result form | Percentile NTA scores, then ranks after Session 2 | Marks-based ranks after both papers |
Worked example of why the attempt rule bites: a student who first appeared for Class 12 in 2025 and sat Advanced in 2025 and 2026 has used both attempts — even a top JEE Main 2027 score cannot buy a third Advanced attempt in 2027. Check your attempt count before you build a drop-year plan around Advanced.
What to do next, and the real mistakes to avoid
If you are targeting 2027: your immediate job is JEE Main — you cannot register for Advanced without clearing its cutoff, and the top-2.5-lakh bar means Advanced preparation is JEE Main preparation at higher difficulty. The mistakes that actually cost people their year: assuming the attempt limit doesn't apply to them (it does, strictly), missing that both papers are compulsory, and planning travel around a guessed exam date — book nothing until jeeadv.ac.in announces the real one. This page should be updated the day the 2027 organizing IIT publishes its schedule; until then, every "confirmed 2027 date" you see elsewhere is fiction.
