JEE Main 2027 Counselling: JoSAA Dates, JoSAA vs CSAB & How Seat Allotment Works
JoSAA has not released a 2027 counselling schedule — it can't: the JEE Main 2027 exam hasn't happened yet, and JoSAA counselling only starts after JEE Advanced results. What this page can do is walk the fully documented 2026 cycle step by step, because the structure barely changes between years: same authorities, same registration window, same five-round format, same traps. Read this now and you'll know exactly what to do when your turn comes.
Who runs what
NTA conducts JEE Main — it does not allot a single seat. Seat allocation happens through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), which handles admission to IITs (on JEE Advanced rank), IISc Bengaluru's B.Tech, and the NIT+ system — 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and other GFTIs (on JEE Main rank). After JoSAA's rounds end, CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs special rounds to fill NIT+ seats left vacant. Registration in both is free at the point of sign-up; money moves only after a seat is allotted, via the seat acceptance fee and later the partial admission fee.

How a JoSAA seat actually gets decided
- Register and fill choices.Log in on josaa.nic.in with your JEE application details and list institute–branch combinations in strict preference order. The order is the entire game: the system walks down your list and gives you the highest option your rank can reach.
- Use the mock allotments. They use real choice data to show what your list would earn today. If Mock 2 surprises you, your list is wrong, not the system.
- Lock by the deadline(11 June in 2026). Unlocked choices auto-lock at close — verify yours before that moment.
- Each round, respond properly. On allotment you must pay the seat acceptance fee, upload documents for verification, and choose: Freeze (accept and stop), Float (keep this seat but try for any higher preference in later rounds), or Slide (keep this institute, try for a better branch within it). Doing nothing — no fee, no reporting — cancels the seat.
- NIT+ finish line. After the final round, NIT+ candidates pay the partial admission fee to confirm; skip that step and the seat is gone even if you did everything else right.
- CSAB if you're still short.Vacancies after JoSAA are published, you register fresh on csab.nic.in (JoSAA choices do not carry over), fill new choices, and two special rounds run in August.
Eligibility and documents
For NIT+ admission in recent cycles, JoSAA required 75% aggregate in five Class 12 subjects (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your board — a rule students forget until it's too late, because a great rank doesn't override it. Keep ready: Class 10 certificate (date-of-birth proof), Class 12 marksheet, JEE Main/Advanced admit card and rank card, category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS in the prescribed format), PwD certificate if applicable, a government photo ID, and recent passport-size photographs. Verification is online for most candidates; discrepancies get a query with a short response deadline — miss it and the verification fails.
Common mistakes
Choice lists built on wishful thinking instead of closing-rank data; paying the acceptance fee but skipping document upload; choosing Float without understanding that a better seat in a later round replaces the old one automatically; and treating CSAB as automatic without fresh registration.

Frequently asked questions
Who conducts JEE Main counselling — NTA, JoSAA or CSAB?
NTA conducts JEE Main but does not allot any seat. JoSAA handles admission to IITs (on JEE Advanced rank), IISc Bengaluru's B.Tech, and the NIT+ system (on JEE Main rank), and CSAB runs special rounds afterwards to fill NIT+ seats left vacant.
When does JoSAA counselling start?
Only after JEE Advanced results. In 2026, JoSAA registration and choice filling ran from 2–11 June 2026, following the JEE Advanced result on 1 June 2026. No 2027 schedule exists yet.
What do Freeze, Float and Slide mean in JoSAA?
Freeze means accept the allotted seat and stop. Float means keep the seat but try for any higher preference in later rounds. Slide means keep the institute and try for a better branch within it. Doing nothing — no fee, no reporting — cancels the seat.
Is JoSAA registration free?
Registration in both JoSAA and CSAB is free at the point of sign-up. Money moves only after a seat is allotted, via the seat acceptance fee and later the partial admission fee for NIT+ candidates.
Do my JoSAA choices carry over to CSAB?
No. For CSAB you register fresh on csab.nic.in and fill new choices; JoSAA choices do not carry over.
What Class 12 marks are needed for NIT+ admission?
In recent cycles JoSAA required 75% aggregate in five Class 12 subjects (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your board — a great rank does not override this rule.
