IIT JAM 2027: Registration Closed on 19 October — What Happens Next
The most important sentence on this page is the one the old version could not say: registration for IIT JAM 2027 is closed. The JOAPS application window, run by IIT Kharagpur as this cycle's organising institute, shut at 11:59 PM on 19 October 2026 — itself an extension from the original 12 October deadline. If you submitted and paid before that moment, you are inside the cycle and this page is now your calendar. If you did not, there is no late window, no offline route and no institute-level exception: JAM is an annual examination, and the next opportunity is JAM 2028. Everything below is written for the two groups separately, because their correct next actions are completely different.

If you applied: the correction window is your last edit
IIT Kharagpur is reported to open a form-correction window tentatively on 1 November 2026, in which registered candidates can fix errors in the submitted form on payment of an additional fee. Treat the date as provisional until it appears on jam.iitkgp.ac.in, but prepare for it now: re-read your submitted form this week and list anything wrong — name spelling against your Class 10 certificate, category and certificate validity (OBC-NCL and EWS certificates for this cycle must be dated on or after 1 April 2026), test-paper selection, and examination city choices. Corrections of paper selection matter more than cosmetics: a candidate who meant to add a second paper and did not cannot add one in February.
One structural rule shapes both correction and exam day: the two papers you may attempt must fall in different sessions. The forenoon session (9:30 AM–12:30 PM) holds Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics; the afternoon session (2:30–5:30 PM) holds Biotechnology, Economics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. Two papers from the same session cannot be combined, whatever the form allowed you to click.
The examination itself
JAM 2027 is a computer-based test of 60 questions carrying 100 marks per paper, in three formats: Multiple Choice Questions, Multiple Select Questions and Numerical Answer Type questions. Negative marking applies only to the MCQ section — MSQs and NATs carry no penalty, which should change how you allocate attempts: an unanswered NAT is a guaranteed zero, while a reasoned NAT attempt risks nothing. A virtual calculator is provided on screen; no physical calculator is permitted. There are no international centres for JAM 2027 — every candidate writes at an Indian centre.
The stakes, in numbers: JAM scores fill more than 3,000 seats across 89 postgraduate programmes at the participating IITs — MSc, MSc (Tech), Joint MSc–PhD, MSc–PhD dual degree and related programmes, with IISc and other institutes also admitting through JAM scores in their own processes. Eligibility for the test itself was deliberately broad — a completed undergraduate degree or final-year standing, no age limit, no minimum-percentage requirement to appear, and no cap on attempts — but programme-specific admission requirements (subject prerequisites and minimum marks in the qualifying degree) are checked separately at admission, and a good JAM rank does not waive them.
The application fee you paid is now a sunk reference point, recorded here because it defines the correction/change fees' context and next cycle's planning: ₹1,000 for one paper and ₹1,350 for two for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates; ₹2,000 and ₹2,700 for all others — non-refundable and non-transferable.
If you missed the deadline
Be clear-eyed: there is no remedy inside JAM 2027. What remains useful is (a) checking whether your target programmes are also reachable through other 2027 routes with later deadlines, (b) using the February paper and March result cycle to calibrate your preparation against real cut-offs when they publish, and (c) diarising the JAM 2028 pattern — registration in September, deadline in October — because this examination punishes students who start watching in the deadline month. Two of this page's readers in three will be final-year students; a missed JAM costs a year only if the year is wasted, and a year spent on the syllabus with the real 2027 paper in hand is not wasted.
From here to 14 February
Results are declared on 18 March 2027, with scorecards and the admission process through JOAPS following on the announced schedule — the admission window in April is the cycle pattern, not yet a confirmed 2027 date (flagged above). Between now and February, the only official documents that matter will appear on jam.iitkgp.ac.in: the correction-window notice, the admit card, and any change to session or centre arrangements. Check that portal — not summaries of it — at each step, keep your enrolment ID and password with your admit card when it comes, and let the closed registration door stay closed behind you: the cycle you are in is the February paper, and it is the same paper for everyone who made the deadline.
