What has been declared, and when
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has completed the result process for the Joint CSIR-UGC NET June 2026 examination. It happened in two steps, which has confused many candidates. First, on 29 August 2026, NTA released the scores, the final answer key and the subject-wise, category-wise cut-off marks. Then, by a separate public notice dated 10 September 2026, it declared the result and rank — the document that formally states what you have qualified for. If you downloaded only your score in August, go back and download the rank/score card as well; the September document is the one institutes will ask for.
The June 2026 examination was held in computer-based mode on 17 and 18 July 2026, across 224 cities, in five subjects: Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences. In all, 1,87,739 candidates registered and 1,50,057 actually appeared.
What this exam is for
The Joint CSIR-UGC NET is conducted by NTA on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is not an admission test for a single institute — it is a national eligibility test that sorts science postgraduates into three outcomes. Category 1 qualifiers are eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for appointment as Assistant Professor. Category 2 qualifiers are eligible for Assistant Professor posts and for admission to PhD programmes. Category 3 qualifiers are eligible for PhD admission only. Your rank card states your category; read it carefully rather than assuming "qualified" means fellowship.
The minimum qualifying marks are 33% in aggregate for General, EWS and OBC candidates and 25% for SC, ST and PwD candidates — but crossing the minimum does not itself win a JRF. Ranks are allotted first to candidates qualifying for JRF, and the number of fellowships actually awarded is limited by the fellowships available with CSIR and UGC, with subject-wise and category-wise cut-offs decided after normalisation across shifts. That is why two candidates with the same percentage in different subjects can end up in different categories.
The actual June 2026 cut-offs: subject by subject
The August release included the cut-off percentages; without them, a score is just a number. All figures are percentages, category columns in the order UR / OBC / EWS / SC / ST / PwBD.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chemical Sciences | 46.250 | 38.500 | 37.750 | 30.250 | 28.250 | 25.000 |
| Earth Sciences | 54.880 | 48.240 | 44.990 | 40.830 | 42.810 | 25.470 |

| Physical Sciences | 34.938 | 33.000 | 33.000 | 25.000 | 25.000 | 25.000 |
How to read your position: Earth Sciences was the hardest JRF bar this cycle (UR 71.020%) and Mathematical Sciences the lowest (UR 43.000%) — a raw percentage means nothing across subjects. Against June 2025, the UR JRF bar rose sharply in Chemical Sciences (50.75% → 62.25%), Life Sciences (51.50% → 66.50%) and Earth Sciences (61.29% → 71.02%), and fell in Mathematical Sciences (53.375% → 43.000%). December-cycle aspirants should target the June 2026 line, not the easier 2025 one. Two structural points: there is no separate cut-off for Parts A, B and C — only your cumulative score counts — and ranks are allotted first to JRF qualifiers, who are then distributed between CSIR and UGC according to the fellowships each body funds.
Normalisation, validity and what the fellowship actually pays
- Normalisation: Life Sciences and other multi-shift subjects are normalised by the equi-percentile method — your rank rests on percentile/normalised marks, not raw marks, so do not compare raw scores across shifts.
- No re-evaluation: NTA does not permit re-checking of the result. Disputes are about your data (name, category, subject), not your marks.
- Validity clocks differ by category: Category-3 (PhD-only) marks stay valid for one year for admissions. Assistant Professor eligibility, once awarded, has no end period. Miss the Category-3 year and the score is gone.
- JRF money: the fellowship pays ₹37,000 per month for the first two years (JRF), rising to ₹42,000 per month as SRF after assessment — but only once you have joined a PhD programme and the host institution registers your fellowship. A JRF rank sitting unused earns nothing.
- E-certificate: certificates are issued through the CSIR-NET portal after CSIR finalises merit, and can also be fetched via DigiLocker once activated. For scale: the December 2025 certificates were activated in May 2026, so expect a gap of months, not days, and apply with your scorecard/rank card in the meantime. For problems, NTA's helplines are 011-40759000 and 011-69227700, and the email is [email protected].
How to download your scorecard and rank card
- Go to csirnet.nta.nic.in — the official portal; ignore mirror and "result link" sites.
- Open the link for the Joint CSIR-UGC NET June 2026 Result/Rank (score card).
- Log in with your application number and password (or date of birth, as the login page asks), plus the security pin shown.
- Your scorecard will display your name, roll and application numbers, category, subject, marks obtained, percentile and qualifying status/category.
- Download and save the PDF, and take a printout. There is no fee for downloading it.
If any detail on the card is wrong — spelling of your name, category, subject — contact NTA through the portal's helpline immediately; the e-certificate is generated from this data, and fixing a certificate later is far slower than fixing a scorecard now.
What to do next, by category
If you qualified for JRF: the fellowship is not automatic money — it activates when you join a PhD programme at a university, CSIR laboratory or research institution and register for the fellowship through that institution. Start applying for PhD admissions and project positions now, and download your e-certificate from the portal when it is issued; interview panels will ask for it.
If you qualified for Assistant Professor: you are eligible to apply for Assistant Professor vacancies in universities and colleges across India. NET qualification is an eligibility condition, not an appointment — you still compete in each institution's selection process.
If you qualified for PhD admission only: universities can use your NET score in PhD admissions under their own rules; check each university's admission notice for how much weight the score carries.
If you did not qualify: the December cycle is the next opportunity; the June answer keys and your response sheet are the best diagnostic of where marks were lost.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not treat the August "scores declared" notice as the final result — qualification status and rank came with the September declaration. Do not assume a JRF rank guarantees a fellowship place in a specific laboratory; it guarantees eligibility to be considered. Do not pay any agent or website for your scorecard — it is free on the official portal. And keep your application number safe: every future step, from e-certificate download to fellowship registration, keys off the same credentials.
Sources & verification
Dates/status are taken from the linked official authority pages checked on 19 September 2026. Recheck the latest notice before payment, travel, counselling, admission or exam-day action because later corrigenda can supersede an earlier notice.
Frequently asked questions
I scored above 33%. Why am I not a JRF?
33% (25% for SC/ST/PwD) is only the minimum qualifying benchmark. The actual JRF cut-off is set by merit per subject and category — this cycle it ran from 43.000% (Mathematical Sciences, UR) to 71.020% (Earth Sciences, UR). Check the tables above, not the benchmark.
Is there a separate cut-off for Part A, B or C?
No. CSIR has clarified that only cumulative marks across all three parts count toward the merit list.
How long is my result valid?
Category-3 (PhD-only) marks: one year for admissions. Assistant Professor eligibility: no expiry once awarded. JRF: the fellowship must be activated by joining a PhD programme and registering through the host institution.
When will my e-certificate come?
After CSIR finalises merit, via the CSIR-NET portal and DigiLocker. The previous cycle took months (December 2025 certificates were activated in May 2026), so use your rank card for applications in the meantime.
Can I get my result re-evaluated?
No — re-evaluation/re-checking is not permitted. Contact NTA (011-40759000 / 011-69227700 / [email protected]) only for errors in your personal data, category or subject.
