NITTT 2027: the teacher-training exam most faculty cannot skip

NITTT — the National Initiative for Technical Teachers Training — is not a student admission test. It is the mandatory training certification for teachers in technical education, and if you are a recently recruited faculty member in an AICTE-approved institution, your probation cannot be confirmed until you complete it. That is the context the dates on this page sit in: this is a compliance deadline for working teachers, not an entrance race.

The programme was framed by the AICTE as a national policy for training inductee teachers — broadly, teachers in AICTE-recognised technical institutions and in universities (including deemed universities) imparting AICTE-approved technical programmes, particularly those with less than five years of teaching experience. The National Institutes of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTRs) implement it, with NITTTR Chennai as the coordinating institute. The National Testing Agency conducts the module examinations, which are held as Online Based Tests — Remote Proctored (OBT-RP): you appear from your own location, at home or office, under live human proctoring through your webcam, rather than at a physical test centre.

How the training is structured

The programme runs in three phases, and all three must be finished within three years of registration on the NITTT portal; miss that window and you re-register and complete the remaining training afresh.

Phase 1 is online: eight modules delivered as MOOCs on the SWAYAM platform through the NITTT portal —

  • Orientation Towards Technical Education and Curriculum Aspects
  • Professional Values, Ethics, Ecology and Sustainable Development
  • Communication Skills, Modes and Knowledge Dissemination
  • Instructional Planning and Delivery
  • Technology Enabled Learning and Lifelong Self-Learning
  • Student Assessment and Evaluation
  • Creative Problem Solving, Innovation and Meaningful R&D
  • Institutional Management and Administrative Procedures

Phase 2 is mentor-based training, and Phase 3 is a one-month industrial training. The final training completion certificate is issued only after all three phases are done.

How a module is passed

Each module combines continuous assessment with the proctored examination. The internal assessment (assignments on SWAYAM) carries 30 marks, and you need at least 50% in it — 15 out of 30 — even to be eligible to sit the module's examination. The OBT-RP examination carries 70 marks in the overall module score: it is an objective-type computer-based test of 100 multiple-choice questions, in English only, with no negative marking, and you need at least 50% in it — 35 out of 70 — as a separate condition. Both bars must be cleared independently; a combined total of 50 or more does not rescue a module where either component falls short. Clear all eight modules and the Phase 1 completion certificate is issued through the portal.

Fees

Per the current information bulletin, there is a one-time registration fee of ₹2,000 per candidate towards professional certification for all three phases of learning, valid for three years, paid to the coordinating institute at registration on the NITTT portal. On top of that, a certification (examination) fee of ₹1,000 per module per candidate is payable when you register for that module's examination. The 2027 bulletin will confirm these figures; treat them as the current published rates, not a promise.

2027 dates — what is confirmed and what is not

The National Testing Agency's examination calendar for 2026-27, published in September 2026, places the NITTT examination on 26–27 February 2027 (Part I) and 5 and 7 March 2027 (Part II). Those are calendar dates, and the calendar itself is tentative: the exam-specific notification and information bulletin have not yet been issued, and NTA cycles for this programme have recently run under semester names — the exam for the April–May 2026 semester was held on 31 July, 1, 7 and 8 August 2026, in two shifts a day. Expect the detailed 2027 notice to fix the application window, the module-wise schedule, shift timings and the exact session names; plan your SWAYAM module completion so that the internal-assessment eligibility for the modules you intend to sit is in hand well before the February window.

What to do now

Register on the NITTT portal (nittt.ac.in) if you have not — registration asks for basic details, present employment details (designation, institution, department, date of joining) for inductee teachers, experience history, and the registration payment, after which a unique registration ID is generated. Work through the SWAYAM modules early; teachers who leave all eight modules to the exam semester routinely miss the 50% internal-assessment bar. Download the admit card from nittt.nta.ac.in when NTA opens the relevant cycle — the 2026 cycle used registration number and date of birth for login — and arrange a quiet room, a working webcam and a stable connection for the remote-proctored paper. On exam day, keep your admit card and a valid photo ID with you, expect the proctor to watch your screen and surroundings through chat, and note that rough-work sheets and papers are not permitted during the test.

Common mistakes

Treating NITTT as optional — it is tied to probation confirmation and career progression for covered faculty. Registering for an examination module whose assignments are incomplete — you will be turned away by the eligibility rule, not by the proctor. And assuming the calendar dates are final: they are planning dates until the exam-specific bulletin appears. When it does, the bulletin governs.
