The calendar is out. The notification is not.
If you are planning around UPSC Civil Services 2027, one hard document already exists: the Commission's annual examination calendar for 2027. Everything else — vacancies, the exact fee, the detailed eligibility fine print — waits for the CSE 2027 notification on 13 January 2027. Keep that distinction clear and you will not be misled by the flood of "CSE 2027 notification out" headlines that will appear months early.
From the calendar, the confirmed skeleton of your year is:
- Notification: 13 January 2027
- Last date to apply: 2 February 2027
- Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination: 23 May 2027 (Sunday), one day — this also serves as the Indian Forest Service preliminary screening
- Civil Services (Main) Examination: from 20 August 2027, spread over five days
That is a roughly three-week application window, a Prelims about three and a half months after forms close, and about three months between Prelims and Mains. Serious aspirants treat the notification as a paperwork event, not a starting gun — by 13 January, your basic syllabus should already be done.
What the exam is
The Civil Services Examination selects officers for the IAS, IPS, Indian Foreign Service, IRS, Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Indian Railway Management Service, and roughly twenty other Group A and Group B central services. It runs in three stages:
- Prelims (screening only). Two objective papers on one day: General Studies Paper I (200 marks) and CSAT, General Studies Paper II (200 marks, qualifying — you need 33%). Only the GS I score decides the Prelims cut-off. Wrong answers cost you one-third of the question's marks. Prelims marks do not count toward your final rank.
- Mains (counts).Nine descriptive papers: two qualifying language papers (an Indian language and English), plus Essay, GS I–IV, and two papers in one optional subject. The written total is 1,750 marks.
- Personality Test (counts).A 275-mark interview. Final merit = Mains (1,750) + Interview (275) = 2,025 marks.
Who can apply — the rules that have been stable for years
The 2027 notification will restate these, and they have not changed in substance for several cycles:
- Nationality. You must be a citizen of India for IAS, IPS, and IFS; some other services also accept subjects of Nepal/Bhutan and certain other categories with an eligibility certificate, per the notification.
- Education. A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university (including deemed universities). Final-year students may apply for Prelims, but must produce proof of passing before the Mains application stage.
- Age (2026 pattern, expected for 2027). 21 to 32 years on 1 August of the exam year for General/EWS candidates, with relaxation of 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer), 5 years for SC/ST, and up to 10 years for PwBD candidates. On the 2026 pattern, this would mean a General-category candidate for CSE 2027 born between 2 August 1995 and 1 August 2006 — wait for the notification to confirm the exact birth-date window.
- Attempts. 6 for General/EWS, 9 for OBC, unlimited for SC/ST, and 9 for PwBD (General/OBC/EWS) with unlimited for SC/ST PwBD. An attempt counts once you appear in any Prelims paper — applying and not appearing does not count.
- Fee (2026 pattern). ₹100 for Prelims and a further ₹200 for those who reach Mains; women, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are exempt. Non-refundable.
How to apply when the window opens
- One-time registration on the UPSC online portal (upsconline.nic.in) — the Commission has moved to a universal-registration model, so create/verify your registration well before January.
- When the notification drops on 13 January 2027, open the CSE 2027 application, fill Part I (personal, eligibility, centre choice) and Part II (fee, exam centre details, photo/signature uploads).
- Upload a recent photograph and signature strictly to the notified specifications — UPSC has tightened photo rules in recent cycles (including live-photo/face-authentication checks at centres).
- Pay the fee online or via SBI challan if you are a non-exempt male General/OBC/EWS candidate, and submit before 2 February 2027. There is no correction-friendly culture at UPSC: a rejected application stays rejected.
- Download the e-admit card when it is released (usually about a week before the exam) from upsc.gov.in.
Documents and traps
Keep ready: matriculation certificate (for date of birth — it is the accepted proof), degree or final-year proof, category certificate in the central-government format (OBC non-creamy-layer certificates must be current), PwBD certificate if applicable, and a government photo ID.
The classic mistakes: miscounting attempts (appearing in even one Prelims paper burns one), letting an OBC certificate go stale, choosing an optional subject on someone else's advice, and — the costliest — starting preparation only when the notification arrives. The calendar has done you a favour: you already know your exam date. Work backwards from 23 May 2027.
Sources & verification
Verified against the official Union Public Service Commission source on 6 September 2026. Expected or previous-cycle information is never presented as a confirmed 2027 announcement.
