NEET PG 2027: where the cycle actually stands
NEET PG — the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate medical courses — is conducted by NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. It is the single eligibility-cum-ranking examination for MD, MS and PG Diploma seats in government, private and deemed universities, all-India 50% quota seats, state quota seats, Armed Forces Medical Services institutions, post-MBBS DNB courses, direct 6-year DrNB courses and NBEMS diploma courses. There is no alternative entrance route to these seats.
As of October 2026, NBEMS has not published the NEET PG 2027 schedule on its notice board at natboard.edu.in — the 2027 information bulletin is not out yet. The most recent completed cycle is NEET PG 2026, and it is the honest template to plan by: NBEMS issued the bulletin on 1 July 2026, took applications from 1 July to 21 July 2026, held the exam on 30 August 2026 in a single shift, and declared results on 24 September 2026. If the rhythm repeats, NEET PG 2027 applications will open around mid-2027 with the exam towards August 2027 — but treat that as an expectation. Any page quoting you an exact NEET PG 2027 date in October 2026 is inventing it, and your planning should be built on preparation, not on a fake date.
Who is eligible
You must hold an MBBS degree or a provisional MBBS pass certificate from an institution recognised by the National Medical Commission; hold permanent or provisional registration with the NMC (formerly MCI) or a State Medical Council; and have completed, or be completing, the one-year compulsory rotatory internship by the cut-off date fixed in the bulletin — for the 2026 cycle that cut-off was 30 September 2026 (see the flag above on conflicting secondary reporting; read the actual 2027 bulletin when it appears). There is no upper age limit and no limit on the number of attempts.
Foreign medical graduates need their FMGE screening test qualification and NMC/State registration, and must meet the same internship requirement. One hard rule catches people every year: candidates found ineligible at any stage — including during MCC or state counselling — lose their candidature even if they have a rank.
Exam pattern
NEET PG is a computer-based test in English only, of three hours and thirty minutes. In the 2026 format the paper had 180 multiple-choice questions for 720 marks (+4 for a correct answer, -1 for a wrong answer, 0 for unattempted), arranged in five time-bound sections — once a section's time ends, you cannot return to it. That timetable discipline is what surprises first-time candidates: it behaves less like one long paper than like five short ones, and pacing per section matters. The syllabus is the MBBS curriculum across pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects as per the Graduate Medical Education Regulations. NBEMS does not release the question paper or a public answer key; results come as a score, rank and percentile, with category-wise qualifying cut-offs announced in the result notice.
Fees and how to apply
The application fee in 2026 was Rs 3,500 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs 2,500 for SC, ST and PwD candidates, payable online and non-refundable. NBEMS also made Aadhaar-based authentication mandatory for registration in 2026, and changed test-city allocation: candidates select preferred states and NBEMS allots the city, with a test-city intimation slip issued before the admit card.
The application steps, following the 2026 process:
- Register on natboard.edu.in with a valid email ID and mobile number, and complete Aadhaar authentication.
- Fill the application form — personal details, MBBS and registration details, internship details, and test-city preferences (three preferred states).
- Upload your photograph, signature and thumb impression strictly per the image-upload instructions in the bulletin (NBEMS runs a selective image-correction window later, but defective uploads cause real trouble).
- Pay the fee online and submit; download the confirmation.
- Use the edit window (25–28 July in 2026) only for fields NBEMS allows — some fields are locked from the start.
- Download the test-city intimation slip and then the admit card (released 25 August 2026 for the August exam), take a colour printout, and affix a recent photograph as instructed.
Documents to keep ready
MBBS degree or provisional certificate, NMC/State Medical Council registration certificate, internship completion certificate (or a certificate from the institution head if completing by the cut-off), Aadhaar card, category certificate in the prescribed Central Government format for MCC counselling, and PwD certificate where applicable. Counselling itself is split: MCC (mcc.nic.in) runs the all-India 50% quota, deemed universities, central universities and AFMS seats, while state authorities run state quota seats — you register separately for each you want.
Common mistakes
Assuming the internship date will be extended (plan to finish by the bulletin date, not a hoped-for extension); uploading a selfie instead of the specified passport photograph format; entering a registration number that does not match the council record; and waiting for the 2027 bulletin before starting serious preparation — the gap between bulletin and exam is about eight weeks, which is revision time, not first-reading time.
