SWAYAM July 2026: your online courses only become credit if you sit this exam
SWAYAM — Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds — is the Government of India's own MOOC platform, run through national coordinators across higher education, engineering, management and school education. The courses themselves are free to learn. What is not automatic is the certificate and, more importantly, the academic credit your college may allow you to transfer from a SWAYAM course. That requires passing the proctored semester-end examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) — and for the July 2026 semester, that window is now open and time-bound.
NTA has scheduled the SWAYAM July 2026 semester examinations for 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 December 2026, in computer-based mode, with 13 and 14 December held as buffer dates in the original exam-date notice of 17 September 2026. The registration for this examination cycle opened on 9 October 2026, covering 662 courses, and closes on 31 October 2026. If you spent the July semester completing SWAYAM coursework and assignments, this registration is the step that converts that effort into an examinable, certifiable result. Miss it, and the semester's work earns no certificate at all.
The dates that govern your next six weeks
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Registration opened | 9 October 2026 |
| Last date to submit the application | 31 October 2026 (11:50 PM) |
| Last date to pay the examination fee | 1 November 2026 (11:50 PM) |
| Application correction window | 2–3 November 2026 |
| Examinations | 8–12 December 2026 |
| Buffer dates (per original notice) | 13–14 December 2026 |
| Exam city intimation and admit card | To be announced by NTA |
Read the middle three rows as a single workflow. Submitting the form by 31 October is not enough — the fee transaction must succeed by 1 November for the registration to count, and the 2–3 November correction window is your only chance to fix permitted errors: a wrong course code or a misspelt name discovered in December is discovered too late. Exams run in two shifts — morning 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and afternoon 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM — and candidates registered for multiple courses in the same shift must carefully choose which course to appear for in that slot; the system will not sit two of your papers at once.
Fees
The examination fee is per the NTA structure reported for this cycle:
| Category | First course | Each additional course |
|---|---|---|
| General (UR) | ₹750 | ₹600 |
| Gen-EWS / OBC-NCL / SC / ST / PwD / PwBD | ₹500 | ₹400 |
Payment is online through the portal's standard modes (debit/credit card, net banking and allied options). Do not pay twice if a transaction shows pending — check the portal's payment status first, because duplicate-payment refunds in NTA systems are slow and never worth the anxiety in exam week.
Who needs to register — and for what
Anyone who has enrolled in and pursued a July 2026 SWAYAM course that carries a proctored examination and a certificate. Eligibility for the courses themselves is course-specific — as a rule of thumb in tracker summaries of this cycle, undergraduate-level courses assume a 10+2 pass and postgraduate-level courses a bachelor's degree — but the examination registration assumes something more specific: that you actually registered on SWAYAM for the course, completed its requirements through the semester, and are registering for the exam for that same course. Registering for an exam in a course you never enrolled in, or enrolled in under a different account or email, is the classic own-goal in this system. Before you pay, reconcile three things: the course name and code, the SWAYAM enrolment under your login, and the exam form entry. They must match exactly.
How to register, step by step
- Go to the official portal— exams.nta.nic.in/swayam/ — and open the July 2026 semester examination registration link.
- Register and create your loginwith an email and mobile number you control and will still control in December.
- Fill the application form— personal details, academic information and, critically, the course or courses you are appearing for.
- Upload the prescribed photograph, signature and documentsin the required formats.
- Pay the feefor your category and course count, and confirm the transaction shows successful on the portal.
- Submit and save the confirmation page.Keep the print/PDF until results are declared.
- Use the 2–3 November correction windowif anything in the submitted form is wrong — this is the last edit you will ever get.
Common mistakes
Assuming that completing a SWAYAM course automatically enrols you for its exam — it does not; course enrolment and NTA exam registration are two separate acts, and only the second one puts you in a December exam hall. Registering under a different email from your SWAYAM course account, breaking the link between coursework and exam. Paying the fee on 31 October against a form submitted carelessly, then finding the error after the correction window shuts. Choosing extra courses speculatively and creating same-shift clashes. And ignoring the buffer dates' meaning: 13–14 December are NTA's contingency, invoked only if the agency reschedules — build your December travel around 8–12 December, not around the buffer.
After registration
NTA will announce exam-city information and release admit cards ahead of the December examinations; the result timeline follows NTA's normal cycle in the weeks after. Your December preparation should run in parallel with the paperwork: the SWAYAM course materials, weekly assignments and any discussion-forum clarifications from your course are the syllabus — the proctored exam tests the course you took, not a generic subject paper. Finish the remaining course modules now, while the registration window is still open, so that by admit-card week you are revising, not completing, and the certificate your July effort deserves is actually within reach.
