Who can apply

FAEA's own eligibility criteria are short and specific:

  • You must be an Indian citizen and a permanent resident of India.
  • You must have passed the Class 12 examination from a recognised Indian board.
  • Final selection depends on your Class 12 scores together with your performance in the selection interview.
  • You must meet the language proficiency requirements of the institution where you will study.

In practice, the programme is aimed at students who have just passed Class 12, or who are in the first year of an undergraduate course, and who come from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds — Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Classes and Below Poverty Line families are the core groups the Foundation names in its mission. You can pursue any academic discipline, in any university or college in India, as long as the course fits FAEA's objective. That breadth is unusual: arts, commerce and science degrees sit alongside engineering, medicine and other professional courses, because the Foundation is funding the student, not a particular subject.

Students whose Class 12 results have not yet been declared when a cycle opens should wait for their results before applying, since Class 12 performance is part of the selection decision.

What the scholarship actually pays

FAEA does not publish a single fixed amount, and any website quoting one tidy figure for every student is oversimplifying. The Foundation decides the grant for each selected student individually, within its budget guidelines, and the award may cover the full or partial cost of the student's study plan. In broad terms the support is designed to cover the real costs of an undergraduate education — tuition fees, maintenance, and hostel and mess charges where applicable, along with other allowances — and the Foundation also helps selected candidates with logistical arrangements such as travel and insurance.

Two conditions attached to the money deserve attention. First, support is given for up to three years in the first instance, and can be extended for a further two years of postgraduate study, depending on the student's performance in the graduate examinations and the availability of funds. Second, you must tell the FAEA office about any other grant, scholarship or financial aid you receive for the same programme. FAEA may rework your grant in light of that information, and failing to disclose other support can be grounds for the award being revoked. Continuation also depends on satisfactory academic progress; this is not a one-time cheque that arrives regardless of results.

How selection works

The selection process has three layers, which is why a strong application matters even before marks are considered. Applications are first reviewed and evaluated by a regional panel of academics, NGO practitioners and others. Shortlisted candidates are then invited for a regional interview, held in the metropolitan city closest to the student's home. Finally, a national panel makes the selection, and its decision is final. The award is also conditional on the student actually being accepted by the host institution.

FAEA is blunt about one thing: any attempt to influence the selection decision leads to disqualification. There is no management quota, no recommendation route, and no agent in between.

How to apply in the next cycle

Registration is online through FAEA's own website, faeaindia.org — not through the National Scholarship Portal and not through any aggregator. The pattern from the 2026–27 cycle was:

  • When the advertisement appears (FAEA announces the year's scholarship numbers by May/June), open the registration link on the FAEA homepage and register as a fresh candidate with your own mobile number and email.
  • Fill in your personal details, Class 12 board and marks, the course and institution you are joining, and your family and category background accurately — the regional panel screens on this form before any interview.
  • Upload the documents the form asks for and submit before the deadline. Applications received after the due date are not considered, with no exceptions mentioned in the Foundation's guidelines.
  • Keep your registration confirmation and check the FAEA website and your email for shortlist and interview calls. If you are shortlisted, prepare for the regional interview — it carries real weight alongside your Class 12 marks.
  • After selection, inform FAEA of any other financial aid you hold, and respond promptly to its requests during placement, since the level and duration of the award are settled in that process.

What to do now

If you missed the 7 July 2026 deadline, the useful move is not to hunt for a late window — there isn't one — but to be ready for the next advertisement. Keep your Class 12 mark sheet, category or BPL/income documents and admission proof in one folder, watch faeaindia.org from May 2027 onwards, and apply in the first weeks of the window rather than the last. Among private scholarships in India, this is one of the few designed from the ground up for disadvantaged students, with interview-based selection and support that can extend beyond graduation. For a student who fits its mission, it is worth the wait and the preparation.
