What the programme is
The GSK Scholars Programme is a CSR initiative of GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd., run in association with the Foundation for Excellence (FFE), a long-established nonprofit that funds disadvantaged students through professional degrees. Its purpose is straightforward: financially constrained but meritorious students entering MBBS should not drop out over money. FFE's own page states that over 300 MBBS scholars have been supported so far under this initiative.
For the 2026–27 cycle, the programme offers financial assistance of up to ₹1,00,000 per year for up to 4.5 years — that is, the full duration of the MBBS course — to cover academic expenses. The official FFE page lists the application deadline as 31 December 2026.
Who can apply
The programme is narrowly defined, and each condition matters:
- You must be an Indian national.
- You must be in the first year of an MBBS programme at a government medical college in India. Students in later years, private colleges, or other courses (including BDS) are outside the scope.
- You should have scored at least 65% in your Class 12 board examinations.
- Your annual family income from all sources must be below ₹6,00,000.
- Children of employees of GSK Pharmaceuticals and of the application partner are not eligible.
If you're a first-year MBBS student at a government college who entered through NEET and your family's finances are genuinely stretched, this is one of the highest-value scholarships available to you — and it renews across the whole degree rather than being a one-year award.
What the money covers
The scholarship is paid annually, by reimbursement, directly to the scholar's bank account at the end of the academic term. Because it's reimbursement-based, you must keep every original receipt: tuition fee receipts, hostel and mess receipts, book receipts, and internet/data recharge receipts. FFE's page asks scholars to club all receipts into a single document and upload it with the scholarship application/renewal.
Covered academic expenses include tuition fees, examination fees, books and study materials, hostel fees, food, and academic seminars. If funds remain after those, they may go toward stationery, online learning, and internet/data bills. The key discipline: no receipts, no reimbursement.
How selection works
The selection process, as described on FFE's page, runs in stages:
- Shortlistingon academic merit and financial background.
- Document verificationof the shortlisted candidates.
- Telephonic interviewafter verification.
- Final selectionof scholars.
It's a merit-cum-means process — both your Class 12 and admission credentials and your family's income situation count. A strong academic record with a borderline income, or genuine need with weak academics, each tells only half the story the selectors want.
How to apply — step by step
- Open the official programme page at ffe.org/ffe-gsk-scholarship-program/ and read the full details under each tab (eligibility, award information, selection process, notification, payment) before starting.
- Begin the application through the route the page provides, registering with your own email and mobile number.
- Fill in your personal, academic, and family-income details accurately — income figures must match your income proof.
- Upload your documents (listed below) in clear scans.
- Review the preview, accept the terms, and submit before 31 December 2026. Late applications are not entertained.
- Save the acknowledgement, and keep your phone reachable — shortlisted candidates are contacted for the telephonic interview.
Documents you'll need
- Government-issued identity proof (Aadhaar, voter ID, PAN, or driving licence)
- Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets
- Proof of current-year college enrolment — admission letter, institution ID card, or bonafide certificate
- First-year MBBS fee receipts already paid
- Family income proof — income certificate, salary slips, Form 16, or ITR, as applicable
- Your bank account details (the reimbursement goes here)
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Where relevant: parent's death certificate (single parent/orphan applicants), disability certificate
Common mistakes
- Treating it as a cash prize. It's reimbursement against academic expenses; if you throw away receipts, you lose money you're entitled to.
- Applying from the wrong year or college type. Second-year students and private-college students are ineligible, and applications are screened on exactly this.
- Income proof that doesn't add up. Family income from all sources must be under ₹6 lakh, and the documents must tell a consistent story.
- Waiting until late December. Document verification queries take time; an application filed on the 30th with a defective upload has no room to recover.
- Ignoring the FAQ's stale dates. Parts of FFE's page still carry text from older cycles — follow the 2026–27 deadline stated on the page, not the old FAQ references.
What happens after you apply
If shortlisted, you'll go through document verification and a telephonic interview before final selection. Keep your admission documents and income proofs at hand through January, and respond promptly to any query — silence at the verification stage reads as disinterest. If selected, remember the discipline that keeps the money flowing: pass your year, keep every receipt, and file the renewal paperwork on time, every year, for all 4.5 years.
