The three boards at a glance
Bihar Board (BSEB) is the state board most Bihar students sit. CBSE is the national board run by the central government, used by Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas and most private schools. NIOS is the national open-schooling board for students who need flexibility — school dropouts, working students, athletes, and students who failed on another board and need to clear subjects one at a time.
| Feature | Bihar Board (BSEB) | CBSE | NIOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run by | Bihar School Examination Board, Patna | Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi | National Institute of Open Schooling (Ministry of Education) |
| Who sits it | Students of Bihar schools (state board) | Students of CBSE-affiliated schools across India | Open learners anywhere in India; no regular school needed |
| Classes covered | Class 10 (Matric) and Class 12 (Intermediate) | Class 10 and Class 12 | Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) |
| Exam mode | Offline, pen-and-paper, two shifts a day | Offline, pen-and-paper | Offline public exams twice a year + On-Demand Exams |
| 2026 exam window | Class 12: 2-13 Feb; Class 10: 17-25 Feb | Class 10: 17 Feb-11 Mar; Class 12: 17 Feb-9 Apr | Public exams April-May and October-November; ODE year-round |
| 2026 result date | Class 12: 23 Mar; Class 10: 29 Mar (tracker-reported) | Class 10: 15 Apr; Class 12: 13 May | April-May session results in June 2026 (tracker-reported) |
| 2027 date sheet | Not released yet (25 Oct 2026) | Not released yet; expected end of October 2026 | Block I registration closed 30 Sep 2026 |
BSEB is consistently the fastest to declare results — its 2026 Class 12 result came 23 March, about five weeks after the exams ended, while CBSE Class 12 took until 13 May.
Exam pattern: subjects and marks
| Feature | Bihar Board | CBSE | NIOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 10 subjects | 5 subjects x 100 marks = 500 total | 5 subjects (3 compulsory + 2); theory 80 + internal 20 in most subjects | Minimum 5 subjects (at least 1, at most 2 languages); TMA 20 marks per subject |
| Class 12 subjects | Language + stream subjects (Science / Commerce / Arts); 500 total | 5 subjects; theory 70 + practical 30, or 80 + 20, depending on subject | Minimum 5 subjects (at least 1, at most 2 languages); TMA 10 marks per subject |
| Practical / internal | Practical subjects have separate passing criteria | Theory and practical must each be passed separately (Class 12) | Practical 33% separately for Class 12; TMA is compulsory — students who do not submit TMA are barred from the exam hall |
| Second board exam (Class 10) | No — one annual exam | Yes, from 2026: first board exam in February, second in May | Not applicable — two public sessions plus On-Demand |
BSEB Class 12 toppers scored 481/500 in 2026 (Science), confirming the 500-mark total. CBSE's 80/20 and 70/30 splits are per the CBSE curriculum; NIOS TMA marks (20 for Class 10, 10 for Class 12) are part of the subject total.
Passing marks: all 33%, applied differently
Every board in this comparison sets the pass line at 33%. What differs is what the 33% applies to — and that difference decides whether a student who scored 30 in theory but 40 overall passes or fails.
| Rule | Bihar Board | CBSE | NIOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum per subject | 33% in each subject; language subjects 30% (compartment exam); Class 10 also needs 150 aggregate marks | 33% in each subject | 33% in each subject |
| Theory vs practical | 33% in theory and practical (practical subjects have separate criteria) | Class 12: 33% separately in theory and in practical/internal. Class 10: 33% separately in external and internal components (2026-27 curriculum) | Class 12: 33% in theory separately and 33% in practical separately. Class 10: 33% in aggregate of theory + practical |
| Aggregate rule | Class 12 aggregate at least 30%; Class 10 aggregate at least 150/500 | No aggregate declared — CBSE does not declare an overall percentage | No single percentage on the marksheet; grade per subject on a 9-point scale (D = 33-40 is a pass) |
| Grace marks | Not published as a rule in this run | CBSE awards grace marks under its bye-laws in borderline cases | NIOS applies grace marks at the board's discretion for students narrowly short of the pass mark (tracker-reported) |
The CBSE Class 10 separate-pass rule was relaxed in 2018, but the 2026-27 curriculum again requires 33% separately in external and internal components — until CBSE clarifies, aim for at least 27/80 in theory and 7/20 in internal assessment (tracker guidance).
Failed a subject? The second-chance rules compared
This is where the three boards differ most. Bihar Board and CBSE both run a compartment (supplementary) exam in the same academic year. NIOS does not have a compartment exam at all — it has something more flexible instead.
| Rule | Bihar Board | CBSE | NIOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can take it | Failed in 1 or 2 subjects, or absent in 1-2 subjects | Class 12: failed in 1 subject. Class 10: failed in up to 2 subjects | Any student with failed subjects — result is marked 'Continue', not 'Fail' |
| Who cannot | Failed in 3 or more subjects, or debarred/expelled — must repeat the year | Students declared 'Essential Repeat' cannot take it | No such bar — failed subjects are re-taken in a later session |
| When it happens | Compartment exam after the main result; 2026 compartment result 23 May 2026 | Supplementary exam in July (Class 12 on 15 July 2026 in the first schedule; held 28 July 2026); Class 10 in the May second board exam from 2026 | Next public session (April-May or October-November), or any time through the On-Demand Exam |
| Attempts allowed | One compartment chance per year; failing again means repeating the year | Up to three attempts | Up to 9 attempts per subject (tracker-reported); no strict limit on ODE attempts |
| What is re-taken | Only the failed subjects; marks in passed subjects stay unchanged | Only the failed subject(s); practical/internal marks from the main exam are carried forward | Only the failed subjects; passed subjects stay cleared within the registration validity |
| 2026 compartment result | 23 May 2026 (tracker-reported) | Class 12: 12 August 2026 — 53.08% of 1,64,231 candidates passed | Not applicable — no compartment exam |
NIOS also offers Transfer of Credit (TOC): a student who passed some subjects on any recognised board can transfer those marks and appear through NIOS only for the failed subjects.
The On-Demand Examination is NIOS's biggest structural difference. Under Stream 2 (ODE), a student can appear in 1 to 4 subjects at any time of the year except April, May, October and November, with results in about 30 days — far faster than the 45-60 days for a public session. ODE fees are Rs 600 per theory subject and Rs 850 for practical subjects (tracker-reported). The certificate after ODE is the same NIOS certificate.
Result dates and pass percentages, 2026
| Board | Class 10 result | Class 12 result |
|---|---|---|
| Bihar Board | 29 March 2026 (tracker-reported); compartment result 23 May 2026 | 23 March 2026 — 85.19% passed (13,17,846 appeared); Commerce 93.07%, Science 87.46%, Arts 82.76% |
| CBSE | 15 April 2026 — 93.70% passed (24,71,777 appeared); second board exam in May 2026 | 13 May 2026 — 85.20% passed (17,68,968 appeared); 1,63,800 placed in compartment |
| NIOS | April-May 2026 session results declared June 2026 (tracker-reported) | April-May 2026 session results declared June 2026 (tracker-reported); ODE results in about 30 days |
BSEB's 2026 Class 12 pass percentage (85.19%) was slightly down from 86.50% in 2025. CBSE's Class 12 pass percentage (85.20%) was the lowest since 2022, when results returned to a regular post-pandemic schedule. CBSE's 2026 Class 12 compartment pass rate (53.08%) was up sharply from 38.36% the previous year.
For 2027, no board had released a date sheet as of 25 October 2026. The pattern to expect: CBSE exams from mid-February 2027 with results around the second week of May; BSEB exams in February 2027 with results in March; NIOS Block I (April-May session) registration closed on 30 September 2026. These are expectations from the 2026 pattern, not announced dates.
Where each certificate is accepted
All three certificates are recognised for higher education and government jobs in India. BSEB and CBSE certificates are the standard school-leaving certificates of their systems; NIOS certificates are accepted by colleges, universities and employers on the same footing. The practical differences are about entrance exams and admissions, not validity.
- Bihar Board: the default route for Bihar state admissions — BSEB marks are the basis for state scholarships such as Kanya Utthan and Medhavriti, and for Bihar state counselling eligibility.
- CBSE: accepted everywhere in India; CBSE students sit the same national entrance exams (JEE, NEET, CUET) as everyone else, and CBSE's national curriculum aligns directly with those exams' syllabi.
- NIOS: accepted by colleges, universities and employers; the On-Demand certificate is the same NIOS certificate. For JEE, NEET or CUET eligibility with a NIOS certificate, check that year's information bulletin — the bulletin is authoritative, not this article.
- Transfer of Credit: NIOS lets a student who passed some subjects on any recognised board transfer those marks and clear only the failed subjects through NIOS — a route neither BSEB nor CBSE offers.

Frequently asked questions
Is a NIOS certificate valid for college admission and government jobs?
Yes. NIOS is a national board under the Ministry of Education, and its certificate is accepted by colleges, universities and employers — the certificate issued after passing the On-Demand Exam is the same NIOS certificate. For specific entrance exams (JEE, NEET, CUET), eligibility is set by that exam's own information bulletin, so check the bulletin for the year you apply rather than assuming.
Which board is easiest — Bihar Board, CBSE or NIOS?
The passing bar is the same 33% on all three, and NIOS's syllabus is based on NCERT content like CBSE's, so no board is simply 'easier'. The real differences are flexibility and timing: NIOS lets you re-take failed subjects one at a time without losing a year, CBSE gives a supplementary exam in July, and Bihar Board gives a compartment exam for 1-2 failed subjects. Choose on flexibility and exam timing, not on a rumour that one board marks leniently.
I failed in three subjects in the Bihar Board exam. Can I take the compartment exam?
No. The Bihar Board compartment exam is only for students who failed in one or two subjects (or were absent in one or two). Students who failed in three or more subjects must repeat the year and appear in the next academic year's board exam.
How many times can I take the CBSE supplementary (compartment) exam?
Students are allowed up to three attempts at the CBSE supplementary exam. If you fail again after that, you repeat the academic year. Note also that from 2026, CBSE Class 10 students in the compartment category take the failed subject in the second board exam in May, while Class 12 has a supplementary exam in July.
When will the 2027 date sheets come out?
None of the three boards had released a 2027 date sheet as of 25 October 2026. On the 2026 pattern, expect CBSE's in late October 2026 with exams from mid-February 2027, BSEB's timetable closer to the exams (BSEB exams were 2-25 February in 2026), and NIOS Block I (April-May session) registration, which closed on 30 September 2026. Check biharboardonline.com, cbse.gov.in and nios.ac.in — not tracker sites — for the release.
Does CBSE still declare an overall percentage?
No. CBSE does not declare an overall percentage on the marksheet. Colleges and schools calculate one by their own rules — for Class 10, a best-five calculation including a skill subject is allowed, and a passed sixth subject can replace a failed main subject under CBSE's rules.
