₹50,000 a year, for girls in technical education

Pragati is the All India Council for Technical Education's (AICTE) flagship scholarship for girl students in technical courses. The logic is simple: girls still drop technical education at higher rates than boys, often for financial reasons, and a flat ₹50,000 a year — paid as incidentals toward tuition, books, a laptop, stationery — takes real pressure off a family budget.

AICTE's own scheme summary puts the scale plainly: 10,000 scholarships, ₹50,000 each per year, for meritorious girls taking admission in AICTE-approved institutions at degree or diploma level. The money goes straight to the student through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), not to the college, and it renews for each year of the course as long as you keep meeting the conditions.

Who is eligible

  • Girl students who are Indian nationals. Pragati is for girls only — that is the point of the scheme.
  • Course and institution. You must be admitted to a technical degree programme (B.E./B.Tech and similar) or a technical diploma programme in an AICTE-approved institution.
  • Year of admission. Fresh applications are for students admitted in the first year of the degree/diploma in the current academic session. Students who joined the second year through lateral entry (diploma-holder into degree, or into second-year diploma) can also apply fresh in that year.
  • Admission route. Your seat should have come through the centralised state/central counselling process. Management-quota admissions are excluded in the scheme guidelines.
  • Family income. Total family income from all sources must not exceed ₹8 lakh a year — a comparatively generous ceiling, which is why Pragati reaches middle-income families that most other scholarships shut out.
  • Gap rule. The gap between passing your qualifying examination and taking admission must be not more than two years. A longer gap makes you ineligible even if every other condition is met.
  • Family cap. A maximum of two girl students per family can hold Pragati at a time. If two sisters are already on it, a third cannot apply.
  • No double benefit. You cannot hold Pragati alongside another central or state government scholarship for the same course.

How selection works

Pragati is merit-based, but not exam-based. AICTE prepares a State/UT-wise merit list from your qualifying-exam marks: Class 12 marks for degree-level applicants and Class 10 marks for diploma-level applicants. Seats are distributed by state and category as per the reservation framework. If two candidates tie on marks, the tie-breaks differ by scheme: for degree, the higher Class 10 percentage ranks first, then the older candidate; for diploma, the older candidate ranks first, then the lower family income. If your marksheet shows CGPA, AICTE converts it as percentage = CGPA × 9.5; if the marksheet shows both CGPA and total marks, the total marks are used. Reserved seats follow the Government of India framework — 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 27% OBC — and a reserved seat that stays empty moves to the General category. Fulfilling the eligibility conditions alone does not guarantee selection — you also need to be high enough on your state's merit list, and your documents must survive verification.

How to apply on NSP

  • Go to the National Scholarship Portal, scholarships.gov.in, and complete the One Time Registration (OTR) if you have not done so already — you will need Aadhaar-linked details.
  • Log in and choose the correct scheme: AICTE Pragati Scholarship Scheme for Girl Students (Technical Degree) or (Technical Diploma) — picking the diploma scheme for a degree course (or vice versa) is a common and avoidable rejection.
  • Fill in personal, academic, and admission details exactly as they appear on your marksheets and admission letter.
  • Upload the documents (see below) and submit. Note the application ID.
  • Take the printout to your institute — institute verification is mandatory. Your application then goes through district/state-level verification. An unverified application pays nothing, however good your marks are.

Documents to keep ready

  • Aadhaar card
  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets (as applicable to your level)
  • Current-year family income certificate issued by the State/UT authority
  • Admission letter / proof of enrolment in the AICTE-approved institution
  • Bonafide certificate from the institute, in the prescribed format where asked
  • Bank passbook copy — a regular individual savings account in your own name, Aadhaar-seeded for DBT. FRILL, minor, and joint accounts are reported to fail DBT, so fix the account type before you apply, not after.
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC) if you are claiming a reserved seat
  • Parent/guardian declaration in the prescribed format

What Pragati is worth in total — and how competitive your state is

₹50,000 a year sounds flat until you multiply it by your course length:

What Pragati is worth in total — and how competitive your state is
Course and entryYears paidMaximum total
Degree, admitted in 1st year4₹2,00,000
Degree, lateral entry in 2nd year3₹1,50,000
Diploma, admitted in 1st year3₹1,50,000
Diploma, lateral entry in 2nd year2₹1,00,000

The 10,000 seats split 5,000 degree + 5,000 diploma, allotted state-wise in proportion to each state's AICTE-approved seats, with a minimum of 50 seats per state and caps of 800 (degree) and 700 (diploma). The largest pools: Tamil Nadu 800 degree / 700 diploma; Maharashtra 553 / 624; Uttar Pradesh 422 / 700; Andhra Pradesh 566 / 318; Karnataka 398 / 365; Telangana 424 / 206. You compete only against applicants from your own state — a 78% in a small-pool state can be safer than an 85% in Tamil Nadu. Seats left empty in degree move to diploma and vice versa.

The exception that changes everything: girls from 13 North-Eastern states and UTs — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Lakshadweep — are covered without a seat cap: every eligible applicant gets it. If that is you, Pragati is not a competition; it is paperwork.

Renewal: who renews in 2026–27, and how

Pragati is not automatic after year one — you file a renewal on NSP every year, by the same 31 October deadline, with institute verification by 15 November. In 2026–27 the renewal batches are: degree students from the 2023–24 batch, and degree and diploma students from the 2024–25 and 2025–26 batches. Upload your previous year's passing marksheet and a letter from the Head of your Institution. If you are not promoted — fail or drop out — the scholarship stops and cannot be renewed.

Document formats that get applications rejected

Four documents must be in AICTE's own prescribed formats, signed as shown — a certificate without the required signature and stamp can be rejected outright:

SwanathOrphaned students, wards of armed/central paramilitary personnel martyred in action, and similar categories (check current guidelines)₹50,000/yr—

All three apply through NSP with the same 31 October 2026 deadline. One caution on combining: AICTE's own FAQ position is that a Pragati scholar who takes another Central, State or AICTE scholarship loses Pragati and must refund it — while NSP's new rules group Pragati as merit-based and treat welfare scholarships differently. AICTE has not updated its rule on paper, so confirm with your institute before holding two scholarships.

Dates and common mistakes

The NSP listing for 2026–27 has been reported with a student-application deadline of 31 October 2026 — close enough that you should treat this month as the window, and verify the live date on the portal the day you apply, because NSP deadlines are routinely extended and just as routinely not.

The three mistakes that cost students this scholarship every year: applying under the wrong scheme variant (degree vs diploma), letting the institute-verification step lapse because "the form is submitted," and entering bank details for an account that is not DBT-ready. Pragati's ₹50,000 is genuinely useful money — but it only reaches students whose paperwork is as strong as their marks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to submit bills for what I spent the ₹50,000 on?

No. It is a lump sum for college fees, a computer, books, stationery, equipment or software. There is no separate hostel or medical grant.

I am in the third year and never applied. Can I apply fresh now?

No. Fresh applications are only for first-year admission or second-year lateral entry in the current session.

My CGPA is 8.4. What percentage goes on the merit list?

8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8% — unless your marksheet also prints total marks, in which case the total marks are used instead.

Can a postgraduate or dual-degree student apply?

No — Pragati covers first-degree and diploma technical courses only; the Shiksha eligibility checklist expressly excludes PG and dual-degree applicants.
