What the programme is
The Aditya Birla Scholarship Programme was instituted by the Aditya Birla Group in pursuit of the late Aditya Vikram Birla's vision of developing leaders — pairing academic excellence with humane leadership values. It operates in partnership with select IITs, BITS, IIMs, XLRI, and law campuses. Scholars get the money plus something money-based schemes rarely offer: network — interaction with senior leadership of one of India's largest business groups, leadership development, and a scholar community. There is no binding to join the Group after your course; scholars are welcome to work with the Group if they qualify, but it is not an obligation. The Aditya Birla World Academy Merit Scholarship is a separate school-level award and is not this programme.
Who is eligible — the institute list is the eligibility
Only students of these institutes are considered:
- IIMs: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata (Calcutta), Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode, Shillong
- Management: XLRI, Jamshedpur
- IITs (B.Tech): Mumbai (Bombay), Delhi, Chennai (Madras), Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati
- BITS: Pilani campuses
- Law: National Law School of India University (Bangalore), NALSAR University of Law (Hyderabad), The WB National University of Juridical Sciences (Kolkata), National Law University (Jodhpur)
If your institute is not on this list, there is no route in — not even a direct application. Within these institutes, the top 20 students by entrance-exam ranking at admission (JEE Advanced rank for IITs, CAT for IIMs, and so on) are invited to apply, through the Dean of their respective institute. There is no income criterion and no category reservation in this scheme — it is a pure merit-and-leadership selection.
What it pays
The scholarship covers a large part of academic fees and hostel fees for the IIT/BITS stream, and part of the tuition fee for management and law:
- IIMs / XLRI: ₹1,75,000 per annum
- Law: ₹1,80,000 per annum, or fees at actuals, whichever is lower
- IIT / BITS (Pilani): ₹65,000 per annum in the official programme text reproduced for many years; newer listings quote ₹1,00,000 per annum — confirm the current figure with your Dean or on the official programme site before relying on it
The amount is disbursed annually and routed through your institution — paid to the institute's designated account, with the Dean/Director's office administering it. If you have already paid your fees before the scholarship is announced, the institute refunds the scholarship amount to you.
How selection and renewal work
The process runs through the institute, not a public portal: invited students fill in the application form provided with the programme materials and submit it to their Dean. Selection combines academic standing with assessment of leadership qualities — interviews and evaluation are part of the process. Crucially, the scholarship is not a one-time cheque: renewal every year is performance-based. Scholars are assessed annually and must sustain high academic and leadership performance — reported renewal criteria include staying in the top 25% of the batch, having at least 60% of assignments rated 7 out of 9 or higher, active participation in at least two campus forums, and submitting an annual 250-word write-up on the scholar experience. Drop below the bar and the scholarship ends, even mid-course.
What to do next — and the honest limits
If you are a school student reading this: the only way into this scheme is to rank near the top of the entrance exam of one of the listed institutes — which means your real preparation is for JEE Advanced, CAT, or CLAT, and for being in the top 20 of your batch by admission rank, not merely admitted. If you are already at an eligible institute and are in that top-20 band, ask your Dean's office about the cycle — the nomination timeline is institution-specific and is not published as a public deadline, which is why no reliable "last date" exists for this scholarship. And if you are at any other institute, do not waste time on third-party "Aditya Birla Scholarship apply online" pages: no public application window exists, and any site asking you to pay or submit personal documents for this scheme is not the programme.
