VITEEE 2027: what it is, and where things stand right now
VITEEE — the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination — is the only route into a B.Tech seat at the Vellore Institute of Technology. VIT runs four campuses, at Vellore and Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, and a single VITEEE rank is used for admission to all four. Board marks, JEE Main scores and SAT scores do not substitute for it: if you want a VIT B.Tech seat, you sit VITEEE. That is stated plainly on VIT's own admission portal, and it is the first thing applicants get wrong when they assume a good JEE score will carry them in.
Here is the honest position on the 2027 cycle as of October 2026: VIT has not yet published the VITEEE 2027 notification. The official portal, viteee.vit.ac.in, is still carrying the 2026–27 admission cycle, in which the exam was scheduled tentatively between 28 April and 3 May 2026. So any website quoting you an exact VITEEE 2027 exam date today is guessing. What you can plan around is the shape of the last cycle, because VIT changes very little from year to year: applications for the 2026 cycle opened in the autumn of 2025 and ran into March 2026, slot booking followed, and the computer-based test was held in late April. Expect the 2027 form around October–November 2026 and the exam in April 2027, but treat those as expectations, not announcements.
Who is eligible
VITEEE is open to Indian nationals, NRIs and foreign nationals, but the academic bar is specific. You must have passed, or be appearing in, Class 12 (or an equivalent qualifying examination) with Physics and Chemistry plus Mathematics or Biology. For the general category, VIT requires a minimum aggregate of 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology taken together. That drops to 50% for SC/ST candidates and for applicants from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and the North-Eastern states. Candidates appearing in 2027 can apply, but the admission is confirmed only after board results show the required aggregate — scoring well in VITEEE does not rescue a board percentage below the line.
There is also an age condition. For the 2026 cycle, only candidates born on or after 1 July 2004 were eligible. The 2027 handbook will set its own cut-off date, but if you are an older dropper, check this line first before paying the fee, because the fee is not refunded for ineligible applicants.
One more distinction matters. If you take the Biology paper instead of Mathematics, you are eligible only for the bio-stream programmes (such as Biotechnology and related branches), not for the core engineering branches that require Mathematics. Choose the paper according to the branch you actually want.
Exam pattern
(The pattern below is the revised 2026-cycle pattern — the latest confirmed. VIT has not published a 2027 pattern, so treat every figure here as "expected, based on the 2026 cycle — the official 2027 bulletin is not out yet.")
VITEEE is a computer-based test of two and a half hours, held at test centres with slot booking — you pick your date and session within the exam window once booking opens. The paper has 125 multiple-choice questions: Mathematics or Biology carries 40 questions, Physics 35, Chemistry 35, Aptitude 10 and English 5. Each correct answer carries 4 marks, taking the paper to 500 marks in total — and since the 2026 cycle there is negative marking: each wrong answer costs 1 mark, a change from VITEEE's long-standing no-penalty rule. Attempt everything you can narrow down, but blind guessing across the whole paper is no longer free.
The syllabus is the Class 11 and 12 curriculum for the respective subjects, broadly on NCERT lines, and VIT publishes the detailed syllabus and a mock test on the portal; the mock test for the last cycle was enabled in March, and taking it matters because the interface and question navigation are easier to learn there than on exam day.
Fees and how to apply
The application fee in the last cycle was Rs 1,350, payable online and non-refundable. The process is entirely online:
- Go to viteee.vit.ac.in and register with a working email ID and mobile number — your application number and all communication go here, so do not use a borrowed email.
- Fill in personal details, address and academic information exactly as they appear on your Class 10 and Class 12 records.
- Upload a recent photograph and signature in the sizes the portal specifies.
- Pay the fee online and submit. Note down the application number; you need it for slot booking, the admit card and the result.
- When slot booking opens, log in, choose your exam city, date and session, and download the e-admit card immediately after booking. Slots in popular cities fill fast.
After the exam, VIT declares results with an all-India rank and conducts online counselling in phases by rank bands. You fill campus and branch preferences, and allotment follows your rank, your preferences and seat availability. Once a branch, campus and fee category are allotted, VIT does not offer sliding or a later change — the portal says this explicitly, so fill preferences in the order you genuinely want, not the order you think looks strategic.
Documents to keep ready
Class 10 certificate (for date of birth), Class 12 marksheet when declared, Aadhaar or another photo ID from the list VIT accepts for the exam hall (Aadhaar card, driving licence, PAN card, passport, voter ID or school ID), category certificate if you are claiming the relaxed aggregate, and scanned copies of your photograph and signature.
Common mistakes
Applying with Mathematics when you want a bio-stream seat, or the reverse; missing slot booking because you assumed the admit card would simply be emailed; entering a name spelling that differs from your board records (it creates verification trouble at counselling); and treating expected 2027 dates circulating on coaching sites as official. Until VIT posts the 2027 notice on viteee.vit.ac.in, the only confirmed facts are the 2026 pattern, the 2026 eligibility structure and the way the last cycle ran — none of it yet re-confirmed for 2027.
Sources & verification

Frequently asked questions
Has the VITEEE 2027 notification been released?
No. As of October 2026, VIT has not yet published the VITEEE 2027 notification, and the official portal, viteee.vit.ac.in, is still carrying the 2026-27 admission cycle. The 2027 form is expected around October-November 2026 and the exam in April 2027, but those are expectations, not announcements.
Can I get a VIT B.Tech seat through JEE Main or board marks?
No. VITEEE is the only route into a B.Tech seat at VIT, and a single VITEEE rank is used for admission to all four campuses — Vellore, Chennai, Amaravati and Bhopal. Board marks, JEE Main scores and SAT scores do not substitute for it.
What marks do I need in Class 12 to be eligible for VITEEE?
You must have passed, or be appearing in, Class 12 with Physics and Chemistry plus Mathematics or Biology, with a minimum aggregate of 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology taken together for the general category. Each correct answer carries 4 marks (500 marks in total) and each wrong answer costs 1 mark.
What is the VITEEE application fee?
In the last cycle the fee was Rs 1,350, payable online and non-refundable. The process is entirely online at viteee.vit.ac.in, and you note down the application number for slot booking, the admit card and the result.
