Who is eligible

The eligibility rules come from the Trust's own admissions page, and they are stricter than most scholarships you will see:

  • Indian citizen, currently studying in Class 12, appearing for the board examination in 2026–27, and applying for an undergraduate degree in India.
  • At least 85% in the Class 10 board examination. The application asks about your Class 10, 11 and 12 performance; the Trust's published hard requirement is the Class 10 score, while Class 11 marks matter when your file is reviewed — and you will need the original Class 11 marksheet if you reach the interview.
  • Annual family income below ₹3,00,000 from all sources. This is verified with an income certificate issued in the application year, so a certificate from two years ago will not do.
  • Open to all genders and all categories, from anywhere in India.

Selection is merit-based and extremely competitive — the Trust reports a selection rate of around 1.67%, with more than 4,000 applications in a recent cycle. That selectivity is the point: Vahani is not a participation prize for good marks; it is a full investment in a small number of students. The Trust's FAQs say every candidate is informed whether they are selected by mid-December, by email or phone, and shortlisted candidates are given interview dates then.

What the scholarship actually pays for

"Full financial support" is the phrase, and the Trust's FAQ makes it concrete: the scholarship covers the full tuition fee for the entire duration of the course, plus a laptop stipend (reported at ₹45,000 by scholarship trackers quoting the programme details), a travel allowance covering one fully paid return journey home each year, textbook stipends, hostel or PG rent if the scholar moves out, food support, and an internet stipend. Beyond money: one-to-one professional mentorship, English and computer-literacy programmes, skill-building workshops, internships, and annual conferences.

The support is tied to approved institutions. The Trust supports scholars at all top government universities and government-recognised universities and colleges, and in rare exceptional cases a private university. Crucially, scholars must verify and get approval from the Vahani Scholarship Board before taking admission in any university or college — a Vahani selection is not a free pass to enrol anywhere you like and send the Trust the bill. The counselling happens during the admission process itself.

How to apply, step by step

The application window opens on 1 August every year and closes on 1 November — for this cycle that is 1 November 2026, 11:59 pm. The whole process is online and free.

  • Go to vahanischolarship.com and click Apply Now to register and create your account.
  • Log in and start the application from the dashboard. The form has ten sections: Personal Information, Family Information, Address, Academic Information, Academic Achievements, Additional Family Information, College Preference, Extra Curricular, Essay, and Additional Information.
  • Fill it carefully — the Trust warns that only 100% complete applications are considered. You can save and return; the form does not have to be finished in one sitting. After the final section, save and submit; you will get a confirmation email on your registered address.
  • Write your own essays. The form asks for a statement of purpose connecting your chosen course to your leadership goals, your family background and financial challenges, and a personal challenge you overcame (roughly 200–750 words each in the programme's standard format). The Trust requires the essays to be written by the candidate alone.
  • Prepare the documents: a recent photograph, Class 10 and 11 marksheets, an income certificate issued this year, and certificates for the achievements you claim. For the interview round, originals are required — original Class 10 and 11 marksheets, the original income certificate of that year, and original certificates for claimed achievements.

Common mistakes

Applying while still in Class 11, or after starting a degree — the Trust is explicit that applicants must be in Class 12, applying for an undergraduate programme. Submitting an incomplete form; the Trust discards anything less than complete. Relying on school marks when Class 10 is below 85% — the threshold is stated without exceptions. And a subtle one: not disclosing the full financial picture of the family. The form explicitly requires information about the family's financial condition, and income is cross-checked against the income certificate. Read the application's Terms and Conditions before submitting; that page, not a forwarded WhatsApp message about "a scholarship worth lakhs", is the source of truth. Contact the Trust at [email protected] if anything in the form is unclear — better a question now than a rejected file in November.
