What this scholarship is

The Girl Child Scholarship Scheme (GCSS) is run by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), the New Delhi-based non-profit educational foundation known for its school Olympiads — the NSO, IMO, IEO and others. Alongside those competitions, SOF runs a small set of welfare scholarships, and GCSS is the one aimed squarely at keeping girls in school: every year, 300 girl students across India receive ₹5,000 each towards one year of their education. It continues in the 2026-27 academic year as part of SOF's scholarship awards.

₹5,000 will not transform a family's finances, and SOF does not pretend otherwise. What it is designed to do is remove one specific pressure point — fees, books, uniform, transport — for a girl whose family might otherwise pull her out of school for cost reasons, and to do it through recognition: she is selected for doing well in class despite difficult circumstances.

The one thing you must understand: you cannot apply directly

There is no online portal, no individual application form, and no exam for GCSS. Selection works entirely through school nomination. The girl's school identifies and recommends her, the recommendation is signed by the school's head, and SOF's committee evaluates the nominations it receives. Parents or students who wait for an "apply online" link will miss the scheme altogether — the only route in is through your school's office, in time for the school to send its nomination.

Who is eligible

A nominee must be a girl studying in Class 1 to 10 at a school in India — the nominating school itself, since the school is vouching for her. She should have scored at least 60% aggregate marks in the previous class. SOF's published rules allow that marks criterion to be waived for a child with a major physical disability. The economic condition is the heart of the scheme: her parents' combined monthly income should be less than ₹15,000. The scholarship is for girls who are, in SOF's own published words, academically inclined but come from economically modest families — both halves of that sentence matter. Strong marks alone without financial need, or financial need without a reasonable academic record, do not fit the scheme.

How nomination works, step by step

  1. Ask the school. The student or parent should approach the class teacher or school office and ask to be considered for the SOF Girl Child Scholarship nomination. Do not assume the school will think of it on its own — with hundreds of students, deserving girls are missed simply because nobody asked.
  2. The school prepares the nomination. The school downloads the nomination form from SOF's website (sofworld.org) and fills in the proposal recommending the girl.
  3. The head of school signs. The proposal must be duly signed by the Principal / Head Master / Head Mistress — an unsigned or teacher-only recommendation does not count as a school nomination.
  4. Documents go with it.The nomination carries a copy of the girl's previous-year report card, duly signed by the Principal of the recommending school. Make sure the marks on it meet the 60% expectation (or that the disability waiver situation is documented).
  5. The school sends it to SOF's National Office.Nominations are evaluated by a committee set up by SOF, whose decision is final.
  6. Results come back through the school.Selected girls are notified individually and through their schools; the scholarship amount is then disbursed (in past cycles, by the last week of December).

Nominations have, in the listed schedules for this scheme, closed by the last week of October — which means October is exactly when a school needs to be moving. If you are reading this as a parent, this week is the time to speak to the school, not next month.

Mistakes that waste a genuine chance

The commonest is searching for a direct application and concluding the scholarship "isn't open" — it is a nomination scheme, and it is open through schools. The second is late discovery: a nomination needs the school's internal decision, the Principal's signature and postal or submission time, none of which happens in a day. The third is paperwork sloppiness — a report-card copy without the Principal's signature, or a nomination that doesn't make the family's income position clear. Finally, do not pay any agent or website that offers to "apply for SOF GCSS" on your behalf; there is no such channel, and SOF's committee considers only school nominations.

A note for schools

Schools may nominate the girls who fit — if your school participates in SOF Olympiads, your office likely already receives SOF's programme material. Identifying one or two girls early, verifying the income and marks conditions honestly, and sending a clean, signed nomination with the report card attached is the whole job. For a girl on the edge of dropping out, ₹5,000 arriving in December can be the difference between continuing and not.
